To any and all who wish to lend a hand...

I will be teaching in the Boston area and plan on starting a Kendo club at my high school (hiring should be finalized at the end of this week, yah me). My dilemma is this: the school doesn't have much money and I am trying to seek a skilled sensei to teach because if I am going to do something, I want to do it right. I am starting my plans to get this club going now since I am not sure how long it will take to organize and I want to spend the next school year DOING Kendo with the students and not simply planning it.

Should anyone have suggestions on how to find a sensei, know of someone who might be interested, suggestions on funding equipment or getting any sort of financial support for the club, feel free to post suggestions in this thread or if you have any info or specifics then feel free to PM me.

Just a thought... I'm only saying it because I have a teacher friend...

Are you sure you're gonna have time to run a kendo club? My friend's principal was anal and unfortunately, my friend got on his bad side, so she ended up having tons of paperwork and lesson plans, etc. And at the end, she wasn't offered a tenure:(

Perhaps, you should get there, look around, and then start some serious long-term planning when you get a tenure...

Kendo club, as with all things kendo, is best done on a long-term basis. I do envy my kendo mates who are teachers; they can always get to class on time, never work overtime, never get transferred on go on biz trips. Then again, they are tenured.

PS. BTW, I saw in an ealier thread that you were interested in this dojo in Stamford, CT. Did you ever get to check it out? How did you like it?

"Never work overtime"

HA! (maybe no paid overtime, I will agree with that)

But I digress...

If all negotiations work out, I will be in the school where I already taught before leaving to live in Japan. The school would actually be in support of something like this, especially because of the demographics of the student population and the school's desire to have more multicultural activities.

I wish you luck. There seems to be a big kendo population in Boston. I'm sure someone local there can help you out.
