whats so funny i just wanted some advice, gosh.....Simple advice, guy - find a dojo. We will all love you then. Until then, you get lumped into the 'backyard budoka' category - not a pretty place to be.

If you post your location, we'll try and help you find a place to practice. If you don't want to practice and just want the kit to piss about 'wakin' (your word, not mine...!) in your garden, be honest with us. No-one likes trolls wanting to learn from the 'net, books and vids. The dojo/sensei combo is the only way to go.

Oh, and why are kendoka in your garden? You smugglin' them in past customs or just making it up?

Actually, it basically just means 'please do (something)' and can be used for a request as basic as asking for a glass of water. Further meaning comes out only in context, so in the dojo it becomes please instruct me, or please practice with me, etc.

The thing is i'm not close enuf to anything to do me any good. so i'm planning and intend to do some type of martial arts where ever i go. you could look on for a dojo close to you. i learnd a while ago, that the martial arts along with alot in life is something you have to get off your feet, and or bum and look for. so don't get so mad at them, but look for yourself. if not kendo, try something else like me i intend to start some kind of aikido soon. i't doesnt matter what you do its that you do something.

Then why do you still write like a 10 year old child? I would think if you are 5 years past the 5th grade, you would have learned how to properly use english and formulate your thoughts in an easy to read and understand manner. Proper spelling, punctuation, and capitalization go a long way toward keeping people from blowing you off as just another ignorant kid. If you can't be bothered to make the effort here, what sort of effort can be expected from you in the dojo?

In kendo, one starts out in kendo only with the shinai, or bamboo sword. Then, as the student progresses, they go onto to wearing the kendo uniform, i.e. the hakama and keikogi. As the student progresses, they are then allowed to wear the kendo armor, or bogu.

So, unlike other martial arts, you don't start out with all the equipment at first.

Kendonoobie, I am sorry for our Kendoka's harsh sarcasm. Most of us are like hungry hyena waiting for poor victim to show up so they can chew you to million piece. I was one of such victim(?) once and now I am one of hyena too  . You are just one of poor victim #5476..

Anyway, just word of advise for you. Most of us, we have to earn wearing bogu, not because we have money. Every worn armour shows the hard work and dedication we have committed and we are very proud of such hard work. Maybe that is why we are so defensive. You have to earn such resepect from fellow kendokas..

Here is what most of went through before we buy bogu. How many people drop out during such practice. Let's say 100 students started.

1) Buy Shinai only. Practice basic swing and footstep during boring 2,3 month. 80 students drop out. 20 left .
2) Buy bokken, some schools teach Kata to beginners. Depend on school.
3) Buy Uniform, once your sensei think your footstep and swing is improved, you can buy uniform. 1~2 months 15 drop out, 5 left.
4) Buy Bogu, Once your sensei think you are ready both physically and mentally, he will ask you to buy bogu. After people buy bogu, they found out that this is not what they want to do and drop out. Within two month, 3 will drop out and two left..

It is not easy to learn or teach Kendo. Again, I am sure you can buy bogu if you have money. Hell, it if free country and you can do whatever you want with your own money. But you will not get respect from us unless you earn it from us.

Anyway, good luck. I hope you understand why we being harsh to your thread. But it would be great if we have one more dedicated Kendoka..

In
My
Humble
Opinion

:cheerful:

pgsmith
12th May 2006, 02:48 AM
Here is my opinion on why some kids get harrassed, and others don't. I work with teenage boys (11 to 18) all the time, and they basically come in two broad categories. 1) Smart-ass kids that are trying desperately to convince the world that they are someone. 2) Interested and curious kids that aren't too sure of themselves and don't know much yet, but are eager to learn. kendonoobie's original post placed him firmly in category one. Category one kids are fair game, and there is no season. Most people feel justified in taking the feet out from under an arrogant liar. If he had made a first impression that had placed him in category 2, I can almost guarantee that he would have had a much different reception. How could he have done that you ask? Simple. By rephrasing the original post, it would have given a much different outlook on the kid in question, and garnered him lots of help instead of lots of abuse.

Here's kendonoobie's original post ...

ok the japanese kids came over to my house and well they brought their kendo equipment. dude did they look awesome in my backyard wakin at each other then i thought to myself..."i really need to do that!!" ive also loved the samurai they are so agressive but yet graceful. so i need help to find a suit of cheap bogu. i can get like 200-300 dollars. And my friends also gave my an O.K. bokken. so what bogu should i buy. o yah and i need a pair o hakamas. so got any advice?
Here's the exact same question, but put forth in a non-arrogant manner ...
I have recently become very interested in kendo, but don't know if I can attend a dojo right now, or even if there's one in my area. Is it possible to get the armor and uniform for 200-300 dollars and learn myself? Does anyone know of a dojo in my area where I could learn? Thanks.
Both of those statements ask the same questions. The second one indicates the kid took the time to address the forum in understandable English rather than like we were another kid's forum. It also indicates that he's thought about things and presented a question that he thinks the forum can answer for him. It does show that he still couldn't be bothered to perform his own research into kendo in his area, or bother to search the forum for answers before asking his question. However, I would feel much more inclined to help the writer of the second statement than I would the first.

OK, just my opinions, and not sure why I bothered to write all that out, but hopefully someone will learn a little bit about how to approach the world from it.

good lord. You know how to throw down, huh? Last time I tried I got caught by the cops, but this is a family forum.Heh heh heh! SNAP! The last time I tried that I was met with a big white van with "POLICE" emblazoned on the front of it, and beaming headlights through the windows. The dude wasn't impressed when I fell out of the back door exclaiming that my trousers were round my ankles because I was simply draining the weasel. If I remember, his exact reply was

Do you think I was born yesterday? Get in your car, and f*ck offThat showed me. No more car-sex for the young impressionable Gibbo.

But dear, there aren't any devoted to kendoka sex! They just don't understand the way the smell of old, sweaty bogu and the sight of runny indigo can turn a gal on. Last time I visited one of those places, noone would talk to me after I asked the boys to hit my men with their big sticks.

I think I've promised unlimitted Americanos to whomever fixes my kikentai-ichi. But failing that, I guess it would depend on whether or not you're wearing a bow tie.

Kendo is a serious martial art.
Kendo World Forum is a serious forum about a serious martial art.
This forum is serious.

If a slice of buttered bread was considered your ki ken ta ichi and Kendo World Forum was considered a toaster, after putting the bread into the toaster, the bread would come out a solid piece of cold.... hard... tungsten.

No..No..let him buy it! Then hopefully next week when he decides he'd rather be a ninja he can let it go for $2 in a garage sale. Keep looking in the local paper Guys.

Yup, UNLIMITED. I'll bust my kneepads out.

...although I suspect if rokudan, nanadan, and hachidan sensei can't fix it then you'd be hard pressed to, Gibbo. Then again, I never told them what I'd be willing to trade.

It doesn't mean squat yet. If you have been going regularly for a couple months, then people will back off of you. Well, that and if you drop the kid-speak. Best of luck. Report back in two months! :)

Im not neccasarily defending this kid, but this is a trend in this Forum that realy has to stop, its realy not nice.Hey Ahmed, this is how a beginner gets treated if he behaves and doesn't act a twat:

Yup. me too. I would like to further point out that he started out in kid-speak. After several replies to his queries, he figured out that he wasn't texting his peers, and began to type correctly and legibly in proper sentences.

That's a young man for whom people will be willing to expend extra effort.
