ok i just got back from watching a practice at my nearest dojo. im gonna join and the sensei says i need to buy a bokken and a shinai. im 5'7" so if you know what size i need it'd be a big help, thanks!

As for bokken, they're pretty much standardized so just look for a long and short bokken.

...look for a long and short bokken.Probably won't need the kodachi/shoto (short bokuto) for some time yet.

yah i when my dojo was doing kata or idaiothey only used 1 i didnt see 2 anywhere.

The kodachi is used in kendo kata. You'll see those forms probably much later.

Good for you. Now instead of starting a new thread everytime a thought comes into your head, why not just have this one or one of the others for all of your questions. Plus, let me give you a heads up, the answer to 99% of the questions you will ask in the next couple of months is "Ask your sensei".

Yeah, and your sensai can probably show you how to "measure" to decide what length shinai is appropriate for you too.

The search option also does wonders as far as it really gives you what you are looking for but it's fun reading.
Good luck on your road of kendo I'll hope you enjoy it as much as I do then you'll be oke.
