View Full Version : Right kote?

During fighting jodan, one of the beginners kept trying to do what can best be described as 'kaeshi-kote', ie blocking my cut and then trying to hit my right kote which was on the side of my hip. While she mainly hit my elbow instead, is that an actual valid point?. I was looking through the rules and nowhere does it say that the hand has to touch the shinai.

Maybe the beginner didn't understand what opportunity they had and was just going for kote, regardless.
IMHO if all the components of yuko datotsu were there, then it would be a valid point, albeit a bit unusual.

From what I understand, right kote is still a target, no matter where it is. There only seem to be special rules about left kote (eg: above chest level / out of chudan), which were discussed in a different thread.
Then again, I'm no expert.

Hey Jakob...it might actually count. Go to the National Geographic post on the Hachidan documentry and download the vid on Mingshi's kendoshop post.
Into about 6mins of it you should see the clip of Ishida's All japan final. He scored kote on the opponent free right hand. The guy was not in jodan but looked like he was going for a yokomen and ishida hits his descending right kote.

Must be a little dull witted this evening. I am having trouble finding the referenced video (which sounds intriquing). Where is it located?
Thanks.

We have a kaeshi-kote in the third set of kashima shinryu kumitachi. But I'm not sure if this is what yo mean.
The opponent cuts right kote, but I step off the line and deflect my opponent's sword by cutting my sword down on it and imediately covering their right kote.
Any help?

Sorry to say ... But it was the kote that was scored... from what I was told.... and like what Confound said, the right kote is a vaild point no matter where it is..... that also means if your right kote is off the shinai... you still can hit it and be scored.... thus the Ishida kote hit (hitting the kote just when the other left his kote off the shinai) is a vaild hit.. and it was scored....
To prove it.. the 50th hachi dan comp last year (or was it this year?) when Chiba sensei vs Sueno sensei in the semi finals... Chiba sensei lost the point to a kote which has left the shinai...

Right kote is only a valid opportunity when the person is in a kamae OTHER than chudan.

You mean the left kote, don't you? The right kote is valid in chudan as far as I know.... We're talking about YOUR right...
