I think this is a stupid question, but I couldnt find any information on it. In Jodo, do you full contact spar the same way in Kendo and Naginata? Or does Jodoist just practice Kata? Thanks in a advance.

Hi ya

Jodo has (excuse my spelling) Kihon - Basic strikes,
Sotai - Tachi v jo in paired form
Kata- Tachi v Jo in paired form.

There is no sparing as such however there is a great interaction between the sword and stick, as these as very dangerous weapons there should be no actual bodiy contact - having said that I have had many bruises that would contradict this.

Tis a great art that I was pushed into by my Iai teacher, and didn't really care for it for a couple of years but now I am absolutely fascinated by it's beauty.

Hope you keep it up.

Cheers

Stupid question??....no such thing, but then again :ponder:.....nah just joking.

There is no full contact sparring in Jodo as it is simply too dangerous. A Jo would easily do major damage through a men or break a wrist through the Kote or possibly even smash through the Do'. And there is too many opening in the Kendo/Naginata Bougu anyway.

It is all done as paired Kata (Jo against Bokuto) and pair work as in parrying the sword and others (again with Bokuto) and the 12 Basic Techniques/movements are done alone, but lined up in a group.

It would be cool if you could use bamboo and do some Jigeiko like Kendo against an opponent but then it wouldn't be Jodo. White/Red Oak is a much different feeling to Bamboo.

Hope that helps you.

Interesting point. I have only been doing Jodo for about 1 year but I must admit I thought it was a bit average ,albeit mentally difficult when I first started. But it really grows on you after a while. I agree the movements become somewhat "beautiful".

Yep it is a steep learning curve. I definately had a love hate relationship with the art- some of us used to say why bring a tooth pick to a sword fight:ponder:

But am happy to say that it is an art for me that is certainly on a par with the sword.

Cheers

Kendo has a alot of beauty in it too, once you aquire and enough of an understanding in it. I think this holds true for many differnt arts.

Ditto

Jodoist just practice Kata?
Its a Kata budo Ahmed.

But you might want to remove the "just"...you'll likely to cause offence to the serious jodo fraternity (followed by a swift whack on the head) :ko: Nothing provokes debate more than labeling Jodo "just kata"...

Yeah...I also like Kendo...I put way more though and energy into it than Jodo. But I gain so much from Jodo that I can't get from Kendo...hard to explain.

The most obvious difference to me is that Kendo or Ken anything is about keeping/gaining the centre. But Jodo is about fighting from off the centreline. I like to see the centre from both sides. It helps me (in a theoretical kind of way) to develop my Kendo.

No offence, but if you see Jodo as "Just Kata" then you are missing the point. Now where are you so I can whack you on the head.

Jodo "just kata"

Does that make it a soft martial art?

ducks for cover Don't hurt me! I was joking! I just spent all night doing jo - honest!
