View Full Version : So how are the gi and hakama (sp?) sized?

Folks, I'll probably want to buy my first gi and hakama (sp?) in the near future. Problem is, I can't figure out how they're sized.

It seems to be based on height alone (eg: 150cm - 200cm), but there doesn't seem to be any other sizing required. This sorta makes sense to me as I can see the Hakama (sp?) can be ties at a variety of waist sizes. Even still, I guess, there must be hassles for really thin or really large people?

It's probably the gi that confuses me more, however, as I've never come across a jacket-like piece of clothing that was only sized by the length of the body. Surely people who might be a 40" inch chest aren't expected to wear something that would fit folks with a 48" chest? And vice versa...

So what's the secret? Am I missing anything profound here? Can you be too small or too big for basic Kendo clothing?

blur,

Try the link below. It will take you to the sizing chart on bogubag.com for the keikogi and hakama they sell from koei. Hope it helps clear things up for you.
I hope "average" size stuff fits you. I have to get my keikogi order made and that gets expensive when you want a couple of them. :(

That's right. The gi is like a robe, not a tailored tuxedo. If you can't close the gi around your body, then, you are seriously overweight (either too much fat or too much muscle).

If you're really skinny, not a problem. If you're hefty or barrel chested, buy a 1/2 size or size larger in the kendogi, you may have to hem the sleeves. If you're really overweight, you might need to order a custom job. Most of the better suppliers can help you with that.

My problem is different one. After trying a few, I thought my size is 25 for Hakama and 4 for Gi but later I found out size 25 can vary as much as 2 inches in length depends on where you buy and Gi as well.. No standards there.. Washing is hot and drying hot still doesn't shrink 10,000 Gi.

my problem is with he length of my hakama, I'm about 168cm, if i buy a 170cm it'll be sweeping the floor and if I buy a 165cm hakama it'll be above my ankle and look ugly. and I'm pretty sure I'm not growing any taller.

"my problem is with he length of my hakama"

Just buy the large one and shorten it. (But wash it first, as it will shrink)

So with the Gi, I'd be thinking of a 6 (6'1" - 6'4") but sometimes there's a 7 available.

Am I right in thinking that the 7 wouldn't be much bigger around the chest and shoulders (this is where I need the room), just longer in length? Or does it get incrementally larger around the chest, too?

Fixing the Gi:
be sure to buy a Gi of proper length (size 5 should be nice for most, even biggies).
If it is too close or too wide, no problem: just fix the Himo of the Gi. They are stitched quite loosely, so getting them off is no prob. If you´ve done this, get into your Gi and try the best place for the himo, then fix them exactly there. Now you need a needle and some thread and you`re done.

I'm planning to get a kendogi/hakama in a couple days from e-bogu...and i was wondering about the sizing.
I'm about 5'7" and the sizing chart at e-bogu skips my height for the kendogi. I was also wondering why for the smaller height, C and D are bigger than the larger height
heres the link http://www.e-bogu.com/category_s/172.htm , thats size 2 and 3
For the hakama i think size 25 should be ok since its for my height, but do i need to consider shrinkage? is it a large factor? The kendogi/hakama im planning to get is the 60$ on the e-bogu site
Any advice is much appreciated, thanks.

Do what I did!

Marry someone who is good with a sewing machine. My wife customize the gi-sleeve and knots and hakama length for me AFTER they shrink from the wash.

BTW...word of warning...if you buy directly from Korean suppliers such as kendoshop.com, the hakama himo maybe shorter than you are used to....
