Hello all,
I am looking for some advise on Bogu. I have been out of Kendo for a few years due to work transfers and etc. I have really been wanting to pick up the shinai and recently decided to join a club nearby. So I need to buy a new set of Bogu. Im looking for a good quality set, not the $1,500.00 dollar set but not the $300.00 set either. Somewhere from a 2mm to say 4mm-ish. So my question is who do you guys feel makes a good mid range set of Bogu based on quality. Thank you for reading.
Respectfully,
Brian C.

This is also a good place. It takes a bit though, but very good quality, at a good price. Try the fd-4 or fd-3

sorry im new at the whole kendo thing but i was wondering what does
fd
and mm mean?FD is part of the model number for the bogu set. MM is millimeters, referring to the spacing between rows of stitching.

so um... why is it that 2mm is so much more expensive than 4?

Hi hedgehog,
FD is like a model number/letter of that company for that particular set of Bogu.
MM stands for millimeter. In Bogu you have rows of stiching. When someone says 5mm that means there is a 5mm gap between the next row of stiches. Or that the rows of thread are 5 mm apart. The lower the number the stronger the Bogu. So a set of 1 mm is a really strong set. The Japanese also have a measurement called BU, it is simalir to MM but someone with better knowledge would have to fully explian that one. Hope this helps you.

Check out http://www.moribudo.co.jp/ef-first.htm and get a price quote for the MC-38.
The mengane is nice and balanced, considering you give them your proper head measurements. The tare will be ghetto compared to comparably priced sets from e-bogu.com or bogubag.com. The men will also be heavier overall and the men flaps won't be as pliable as Koei's men futon. You'll get plenty advice about storing the flaps up but they'll come down no matter what you do. It's cool if you like flaps down over the shoulder look, but kendo isn't about looks. At least for some people, it isn't. And for other people like me, it is. :)

Thank you all for the good info. You guys gave me links to a few pages I have never been to before. I did decide to go with a set from e-bogu for practice. Im going to do some more hard research then pick up another, higher quality set later on. (after the bank recovers:cool2: ) Thank you all again.

e-bogu is actually realy good. i got some 1bu hand stitched kote from them when my old ones finally gave up the ghost. theyre lovely. Does your dojo not have someone who supplies or sources? We've got a japanese lady at ours who imports it. I just ordered a new dou and tare from her.

Hi, I'm also coming back into Kendo after a few years off and I was also thinking of buying a new Bogu because my old one is too small for me now.
I've been shopping around all the websites, Aoi Budo, Kendoshop, E-Bogu, E-Kendo, Etc... And want I want to know is pound for pound, who does a good 500-600$ Bogu? They all have some in that price range, but I can't tell which one is good.
I can't just buy a bogu, hate it and buy another one my wife would kill me! ;)
Right now I like the FD-4mm That Aoi Budo has at 540$, free shipping too. But is it a good bogu? Is there a better one out there for the same approx. price?

Thanks Drizzt, but I've never had a brand new bogu before, always hand-me-downs and used. This time I want a new one. :)
