I have had a problem with white fungi in my bogu. I was given a spray to kill it but it kept on returning. Later I took it all to a bogu-shop and they told me to have it dry-cleaned. Now as I'm returning to the US very soon I don't have the option to have them specialty clean it. I was sondering if anyone has had bogu cleaned by a regular dry-cleaner and how it turned out.

HAHAHAHA! Damn, that sucks. Maybe you'll have some giant mushroom caps grow in there to absorb impact.
I guess dry-cleaning it might work, though. A wicked-hot steam blasting might be enough to kill whatever's there. Good luck with your endeavour!

If you search around, I believe there's a thread around here that adresses steam cleaning.

In other threads, people have said that you can take it to a place that cleans Hockey gear.

Look for a place that uses the "esporta" cleaning system. I'd not recommend it for kote, though, and only if the men is getting really rank. It's not something you want to do a whole lot. I've taken to using a bissel steam cleaner and getting the men done once or twice a year.

You have actually used the esporta system more than once and it does not damage your men?
Wow, I will look into trying to find a local supplier. Thanks!

Get a bottle of Clorox ( laundry whitener ) dilute 20-30 times and spray all over suspected area ( Men, Kote ). You won't see fungi at least for a couple of month. It smells good too. It the solution is strong, it might discolor your bogu. Test with different strength and test on small inside area first..I've been using this over 10 years to battle smell and fungi..

I use Lysol to prevent the build-up of molds, mildew and/or fungus. Before I started using it, I noticed white spots accumulating in my kendo gear and I suspected that these are molds/fungus. Also, after a while of use, the gear smells awful (or maybe it's just me). After using Lysol, no more molds and stink. A caveat though: don't spray too much as it might irritate your skin. Just a few sprays about a foot and a half from the gear works for me. I hope this helps.
P.S.: I'm not sure if this'll cause damage to the gear, but so far (2 years now) my gear is still good (except for the kote of course).

What I really need is a steam cleaner with a small head which can access the interior of the men. Couldn't find one in Sydney. :(

The Little Green Machine by Bissel a hand held steam carpet cleaner can steam within the men. I found it in a general department store that sells small appliances like toasters, and microwaves.
