Can nothing be done? Is there not some kind of update or plug-in that can deal with the spam threads being started up all the time?

You mean 'spam-spam' or 'I-wanna-be-a-kendoka-but-can't-be-arsed-to-get-to-a-dojo-spam'?

Thats not spam technically, those are just dickheads :P
Spam in this case is the automated stuff. Like where a new user signs up and makes one post linking to seduction products or a get rich quick scam or something.
Since it's automated, there's likely a bit of software or an update they can use to filter for it. For example make a minimum post count or time as a member before you're allowed to post a thread.

Vbulletin has a lot of these features - its down to whether someone (Alex/Hamish et al) can spend the time getting the options enabled...

Or just refuse any first post containing a URL...

well i suppose if you have no choice. like when it was invented because the only side dishes available were old boot laces and dirty dandelion leaves then its nice.
saying that, i used to like luncheon meat in the shape of teddies, and thats basically spam...but it is in the shape of teddies...or clowns...which makes it taste better.
i thought the national food of hawaii was coconuts or summit-ah how little of the world i know

Awooga Guy has noticed that a lot of new accounts have been registered lately with the country as "Abu Dhabi" - perhaps these bots just go for the first alphabetical country on the list. Anyway we can nuke all these spam bots from orbit? Unless there is anyone here who actually is from Abu Dhabi.
That is all.

Anyway we can nuke all these spam bots from orbit?Its the only way to be sure. Hehe, we got tactical smart missiles, phase-plasma pulse rifles, RPGs, we got sonic electronic ball breakers! We got nukes, we got knives, sharp sticks...

I dont know if this has been brought up before or not or if it would even work. Perhaps one of those psychedelic word things could be used. The ones where you have to copy the letters, words, phrases or whatever into the box to complete the registration.

If I am correct in saying that the registrants are probably human and not bots, then that won't work.
We should resort to cold hard steel. They don't like it up 'em. :)

That's because you've probably never had a spam musubi. And I don't mean the sickly ones you pick up in the 7-11s here (although they're good for a quick fix after keiko). I'm talking about the kind where you marinate the spam in teriyaki sauce then pan fry until the sugar in the sauce carmelizes and the spam is all crunchy. Oh, and it's even better if you use Korean nori. Hmm... I think I know what I'm making tonight.
Seriously, try it sometime.

So does that mean there are regular meat injections?
Any similarities between what can be construed as "Meat" and the product known as "Spam" is purely co-incidental. Strangely which, that particular word just happens to appear several times in the list of ingredients! LOL
But according to Hormel, the makers of this delicious, if not mysterious meat:
''The ingredients are ground to a medium-coarse texture. Spices are then added to enhance the product's natural flavour. (Just what is the natural flavor of "spam I wonder?) After the blending process is completed, the meat is mechanically filled into cans, sealed, and cooked in a retort oven. Upon leaving the retort, the cans are dried and transferred to the packaging area. A caser then automatically unscrambles and distributes the cans into the feed section, forms the corrugated tray, and loads the cans into each tray. the packed cases are conveyed through an automatic code dater and a shrink film tunnel. The sealed cases are then transferred to the storage and warehouse area to await shipment

Some of the theories of exactly what Spam is:
What is Spam?
* Pig meat.
* Dog meat.
* Rodent meat.
* Armadillo meat.
* Congealed, dyed lard.
* Dyed salt licks.
* Maps, backwards.
* Darn tasty!
