Just decided I'd design some tenugui layouts to alleviate my boredom.
This is the first one I have done so far:

Nice!
Can you explain the significance of the fish?
Omnis
14th July 2006, 08:22 AM
I dunno; I like koi. Like I said, it's just something to do when I'm bored. There's no real purpose... It's more like complex doodling. I can't say that they would make good tenugui, either. I just make them within the tenugui's dimensions.

=o Add some kanji, and your set. Aren't there companies that do Tenugui designs for people?
Omnis
14th July 2006, 09:33 AM
Yeah, but you have to buy a set of, like, 300. Not that I would use that one or anything...

Still, Marc, that's pretty darn good work. I like David's idea of adding some kanji. It would be WAY non-traditional. But new traditions have to start somewhere, sometime.

Hey I like it. What are the inch or pixel dimensions for a Tenugui?
Thanks
Omnis
14th July 2006, 11:11 AM
I looked up 30x90 cm on wikipedia. Scaled down to 640 pixels, it becomes 213x640.
Thanks for the feedback, guys. I'm gonna do more, of course. Post up some rad ideas if you have any.

I believe the Koi signifies perseverance, as it apparently swims upstream a lot. A little spoil sport comment: it would be really expensive to have that
design printed in any sort of usable ( washable) quality. Carry on the good
work.
best regards

I hope to god the japanese makes sense. It's supposed to be something like, "Like Flowing Water." or "Flow Like Water." If somebody wants to correct anything, then please do, and I'll change it up.
Thanks. :)

The left one is normal, and the right has a slight texturization filter thrown on top.

make one with a giant cheese curl in the middle, and smaller cheases to the side.
for nothing, i think you should just use a picture of a kendo-ka, with some random swirls around.
keep up the good work

Hi Omnis... I think your designs are great. Well done...
Thinking about the Kendo Tenegui and its uses there are a number:
1. Purely decorative, a keepsake that can be displayed or hung fully open, either vertically or horizontally for all to see... Yours would certainly serve that purpose without a doubt.
2. As a gift to visiting Sensei or Sensei that you visit... these may never be worn or displayed but might remain folded. In this case it is good to have a part of the design that would be meaningful and visible from a folded position... could be Kanji or could be a part of the design.
3. Worn beneath the Men... in which case thought has to be given to that part of the tenegui that will be visible at the back of the head...
Excellent designs....
Cheers

Here is one my daughter made with our family Mon.
please excuse my ignorance, but isn't that the kamon of hideyoshi toyotomi?
and isn't it also used as the symbol for the office of prime minister?
how is it your family mon? can you trace your lineage to hideyoshi? just curious. i am not very familar with japanese kamon.
BTW, it is a pretty swell tenugui that she made. stencil seems the way to go. we went to tenugui shop in kyoto and up stairs they had a museum of sorts with different "kata" or stencils on display.

please excuse my ignorance, but isn't that the kamon of hideyoshi toyotomi?
You are excused. :) My family Kamon is different.
Toyotomi Kamon:
http://www.yoshinoantiques.com/images/Kiri-mon.jpg
Kenzan no Kazoku Kamon:
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k165/kenzan_kendoka/081506008.jpg
Both Kamon are of a "Kiri", or Paulownia tree, which is used for making luxery cabinets. The Toyotomi family, and many others, also used/use this symbol, in it's many iterations. My family Kamon has three branches off of the main leaf, and two for the side shoots, while the Toyotomi Kamon uses three for the main and one for each shoot. It's not all that uncommon to see iterations of Kamon spread throughout Japan. Bu they are different.
It is also important to remember, that there are hundreds of thousands of Japanese family names, but not hundreds of thousands of Kamon.
How can this be that each family has a totally unique Kamon? Simple. They do not.
During and before Japan's Sengoku Jidai time, many families rose from the peasantry, intermarried, were destroyed, adpoted, created, augmented, and otherwise mingled. Therefore it is is also not uncommon to see two families with totally different backgrounds have the same Kamon in modern days.
Who knows where there got it? Was a distant relative in the past assosciated somehow with a well know daimyo? Or perhaps a servant? or even a ronin wanna-be? One never knows.
I imagine the same can be said with European crests?
I thank you for your kind compliments on my daughter's work! :)

You'd have to change your character order. 流水のように Even then, I'm not sure if it can exist without a clause.
Nice artwork, though.
Oh, yes, the carp is a symbol of strenghth, as it was believed to be the only fish that could swim upstream and survive.

Omnis, these are some brilliant designs. I wish I could find tenugui for sale that look this good :)
Would you be able to do one in a dragon and tiger design (the astrology signs of my girlfriend and I)? Doesn't need an MA theme, as she doesn't do any, but if you want to add some, I do iaido, not kendo (yet). I probably wouldn't be able to get it printed on a tenugui (as a one-off), but I'd love to print it out and have it framed to hang up.
Thanks!

Haha...yeah right. You should have seen the US Nationals this past June. It was in the 90's outside (32+ C), IIRC, and really humid, and we were in a gymnasium with no air conditioning. After the second day's seminar, I picked up my towel to hang it up after my shower, and realized that my juban was more wet than my towel was.
At least I didn't have to worry about my hakama himo coming loose, letting the hakama fall at all. The hakama was fairly well soaked, too, so it would just stick to my legs. Since then, I've purchased a couple of extra gi and hakama, so I don't end up having to ever put on a wet uniform again the next time I'm at a seminar in warm months.
