We did a few summers ago in an old gym with no A/C
... the thermostat inside the building read something like 97-F ....
Those were the worst days of kendo that I can remember. Hated it. H.A.T.E.D. I.T.

We do all summer long, in a gym with no a/c. It does have one floor fan in it but it deosn't really do much unless you're standing right in front of it. Last night was so hot it was right at 99-100 degrees F air temp and humid (heat index was supposed to be 103-106). We practiced kata for the first hour or so (we start at 6pm) and then went on to ippon matches vs sensei and after that ji-geiko with each other. But we practice in the gym all summer and it regularly gets into the 90's air temp and over 100 heat index. Normally we are in bogu most of the practice as well but it was so hot last yesterday we decided to work on kata to begin.

Ugh.. I hated that summer with 100 degrees in the gym...no fan, no nothing. Just staleness. Stifling is the word I'm looking for... and I've been 30 years in Memphis with our bad humidity/heat....
100+ in a gym is something I imagine one CAN grow accustomed to, but... sheesh... ~80ish degrees is just fine with me.

I'm pretty sure this is the same where we all are, but...
for past couple weeks, I'm listening to the radio on the way home from work...
"time now is 5:40; temperature 97, heat index 102.."
"time now is 5:35; termperature 96, heat index 105.."
... that's damn near supper time and it's ridiculous.

I have and the heat can be hell unless you prepare. I used to drink a ton before practice and then I would drink a water or gatorade bottle or two on the way home. The heat never really bothered me until practice was over and then I would realize that I had a nasty headache from dehydration. You can do it, but make sure you take the proper precautions. As annoying as it is, it does make you much tougher than practicing in nice air conditioned spaces.

i'm in same boat, in philly it's still in the 90's at 10pm!!! i am skipping practice tonight because we train on the top floor of a building with 2 fans, no a/c. it's just asking for trouble if i train in this kind of weather. guess i'm not that tough. :)

Well... missing one practice due to heat is not the end of the world, but in some places the weather is like that for months on end so you have to get used to it if you want to practice...

We don't have any AC either and my Sensei doesn't like to talk over the floor fan so we don't use it much. It's been around a 100 here too and if I don't drink a ton of water for the whole day befor practice then I get a massive headache. However, it was a cool 85 yesterday and practice was GREAT! After training for a few weeks at around 100, you feel un-stopable when its 85.

Damn. Yep, we practice in a gym with no air. Or, wait, it does have some sort of spurting fan in the ceiling that doesn't seem to do much.
I think the Aussie's got us beat, though!

Hmmm.. weather.com lists Perth at about 90 for the highs for their hottest month.

Was typing so long and then lost it.... the followup to the above post is that Weatherbase then gives a record high in Perth of 115 (F) with 50 days a year at or above 90 degrees (F). Thats not really too bad. Funny how you get different info from different sites. Do you practice with air conditioning in Perth? I used to live in the Imperial Valley in Calif for a while and it gets hot like that there too. Fortunately it was a dry heat.

i used to play lacrosse, and it was sweltering outside in my equiptment. wearing everything i do (will do) in kendo, body armor, helmet, gloves, and i carry a stick. thats what i hated about lacrosse how hot it whould get in the summer wearing all that stuff. now i dont have too worry about it (if kendo stays in doors) (hey, ya never know, samurai would fight outside ^_^)

no aircon in the gym we train in. The temperature is generally over 90F (32C) during the day in summer, with a week ever now and then over 100F (40C) - mainly in February. The worst Ive done kendo in was the state tournament when it was a non-aircon'ed gym with 45C outside, and about 50C inside (122F). I didnt hear anyone complaining too much, we just drank heaps and Ace brought an esky full of ice! At least at a tournament you spend most of your time sitting around.
Some saturday morning trainings can get damn hot though.
That website was just trying not to scare the tourists ;]

Now it's quite cool in Germany again, but the last few weeks it was very hot - at least for German conditions. Usually we had more than 35° C. We don't have A/C or a fan, only some small windows... But they don't help when it's even hotter outside... :D
We did lots of kata in kendo, no suburi, one day we even did zazen instead of kendo and afterwards went to eat some ice cream... :D But sitting there on a little stool thingy in seiza in hakama+keikogi I sweat like hell - even though I didn't move at all. The sweat was literally dripping down my face. Was really strange. :ermm:

here in oz at the moment its the middle of winter and training is great.
but practicing in summer is a b*tch, we got no aircon in my iaido dojo and no fans either, just open up the doors for a slight breeze. and to make it worse we got these masize outdoor lights in the dojo that make the room eaven hotter. the bad thing about adelaide is that it will be hot one day and rain the next this makes our dojo uncumfortable and stuffy, but i would never miss training because of weather

alison, it's good you guys stay hydrated in that weather.. we also try to. It's always hotter inside it seems than outside but we don't have a thermometer inside so I can't really say what the temp ends up being! lol

Funny I should run across this thread now because I just got back fromk early morning sweat yourself to death keiko. I now have a massive headache from dehydration. No escaping the heat in Japan.

Yeah, where in Mexico is it only 72 average? I'd go down there in the winter and still be hot hot hot.
