View Full Version : Should signing of posts be enforced?

Is it just me or is this forum becoming increasingly feral?

I think it would be a good idea if the moderators instituted a strict policy of signing all posts with the poster's full name a la e-budo.com. This might make some think twice before starting flame wars or trying to inundate the forums with inane thread topics.

Personally if you want to masquerade as some fantasy character you can go to RMA or a chat room.

What does eveyone think? Alex? Hamish?

PS - this doesn't apply to you William me old China. At least you use your real name. :)

Ben,

Why don’t you sign your last name?

What's that China thing? That went over my head, and I'm 9 feet tall. Abdula Fata Aiiiiiiiiii!

Your good buddy,

William

China plate = mate

There ain't a rule for it YET! I do over on e-budo BTW.

And having given my location and the website of my club on my profile, you'd have no trouble finding me if you were ever to come and visit 'sunny' Melbourne.

I’ve always wanted to go to Aus and NZ.

But now?…. I might get my ass kicked.

If I do, I’ll be sure you guys have a crack at me. But only if you buy me a beer after the beating.

Having a real name or some ranks does not necessarily mean everything you said is logical and factually valid. Online discussion is, after all, open for any opinion. If you are right people will agree with you. If you are wrong expect criticism. If you don't want other people to question you, don't bother posting.

The "Who are you to challenge me?" phrase is particularly useless -- it's like Keiko with a beginner and say, "Who are you to cut my Men?" Remember this is a virtual dojo, and everyone is in here to learn. Do you visit a dojo to practice or to teach? Even if you are here to teach, you give out correct directions or information to guide juniors back to the path.

We understand the workload of the moderators, so we shall leave ourselves self-disciplined. I see no point in posting anything without content (i.e. if you can count how many troll-infected posts with only "hahahahahaha" written...). Nor will I type anything off-topic here that can be left to off-forum chatting.

Besides, most of us are traceable people in real life anyway. It won't hurt to sign your name or fill up your profile, if later on someone drops by wanting to practice in your dojo.

It would never work. Unless someone was sitting next to you watching you. I could easily sign anyone's name. :cross_eye

A lot of people here sign their names already, and is So Cal it's not a big secret who is posting. And yes Hongsermeier is a real name believe it or not,......as Shikai sensei would say....."6 kanji....6 kanji...no room left on Zekken!":beard:

I think it's a good idea, as well, Ben. But you and I are e-budo vets and have seen how well that's worked, which is quite well.

The thing it cuts down on is if I sign my full name it will keep me from being so insluting online - cuz then show up at a taikai or something and be held accountable for my behavior.

Charlie..please refer to my earlier post, you can easily sign any name you want. Unless you have to verify with a credit card or something.

I think I'll be....m_french for today.

I agree, forcing people to sign with a real name doesn't do anything to prevent handles, it just forces people to come up with realistic sounding handles. At least this way you can determine for yourself which people are hiding behind handles and which people are willing to voluntarily put their name behind their words. I'm also sympathetic to those who are too shy to use their real names but still have questions they want answered.

Ya.. Who would want a name like Hongserwhatchawhoozit anyways. LOL :D :D :D :D j/k

I like my compact 4 letter/2 kanji character last name. Heehee...
With my shortened first name only 7. Simplicity at it's finest.

One extra thought. Being on forums and ngs from college, people, regardless if they use real names (say of their brother or firend) or nicknames, go to forums to flame or troll. If somebody is courageous (or crazy?) enough, then they will do it.

You guys are trying to create and enforce some structured, orderly society within an internet forum and that is usually moot.

Let's face it, there is only one way to keep a forum flame and troll-free. That's for moderators to be willing to ban members for being anti-social.
Now, before you all weight in on this, think long and hard how militant you want this forum to be. Any enviroment set up for debate is bound to get heated. One man's(woman's) debate is another's fight. Do you really want a third party saying "you are arguing too much. Good bye."?

Always fun to practice with different people. I think you learn more. I did really enjoy some of the drills.

I've been a regular poster on about ten different forums in the past few years, on various topics, and the only ones that did not descend into flame-wars were:

the ones that had very aggressive moderators who kicked/banned people who started trouble.

In my experience with this forum, there hasn't really been a need for the moderators to kick in and be policing threads... people posted thoughtful comments or questions... goofy threads were goofy but not derogatory (for the most part)... although recently things have changed quite drastically... it was nice when people posted thoughtful things, but many of our recent new joining members are seeking entertainment instead of information... a forum is only as good as the members on it, not necessary the police brutality of the moderators... I'd rather have an environment where the people check themselves and be respectful and moderate their own comments instead of the moderators (who are super busy anyway) having to boot people...

the most popular names to see are confound , hai hai, mrkurukuru

dont you agree ?

Charlie

I see your points, but...

1) People signing with fake names are usually found out sooner or later.

2) A polite online forum is possible and generally more beneficial to its members. I have participated in a few, so I know it can be done!

Time for moderator input. You're all banned!

Just joking.

We are totally against banning people (although it is tempting in some cases)
I agree that recently SOME of the threads have gotten out of hand. However, the majority of members are mature enough to ignore the crap and use these forums for what they are meant to be. A place where people with a genuine interest in kendo can communicate, hopefully in a constructive manner. That is still being achieved for the most part.

As for people signing their real names, there is no way of enforcing that, and besides it's just common sense anyway. If people have something to hide, or have a complex which doesn't allow them to be up front and honest and sign their real names at the end of each post, they probably need help and should be pittied. ;)

annoying posters can always resort to signing under a fake name, so i don't think it would make a difference IMHO.

i think what should be enforced here is the moderators will to delete 100% irrelevant and completely stupid posts, and in the extreme case of repeated abuse, ban users.

i moderate a very crazy and sometimes-out-of-control kendo forum myself, and though not as big as this, i've had to delete some posts and ban one user so far too.

if all the posters were polite and humorous within the limits, moderators wouldn't exist. but moderators do exist, and for a very specific reason. control the uncontrollable fools.

We would need somebody to work full-time just to do that!

Good points. I find upon closer examination that it's really a handful of trouble makers, and most of the silly stuff happens here in the sort of "off-topic" section.

So, go to hell, all of you, and kiss my butt.
