I love it!
Hunh. I was lead to believe that making tenegui was kind of hard, as the material is stitched in kind of a weird manner. Otherwise, I would love to have a tenegui with a little prayer on it to read before putting it on. Although I love my shu ha ri tenegui and my "Moko" tenegui.

The material isn't stitched in a weird manner, it's simply woven on a narrow loom that isn't available in North America. The stitching you are referring to is just the finished edge of the cloth. All of the cloth you buy in the US/Canada is woven on looms over 100 cm wide. So if you want to make a tenugui here, you have to hem up one side. Whereas in Japan the tenugui are woven on the same sized looms used to make material for obi and so forth, ie the 30 cm-ish width is common there.
The other issue is the way the material is printed. It's hard to find a place here that will make a pattern with dye the way the Japanese tenugui are done, it's usually silk-screened with ink so you get it only on one side and it doesn't breath there. If anyone knows of a place in the US or Canada that does the tenugui-style printing (don't know what it's called), please let me know.

It depends on what kind of acrylic ink and medium you are using during screenprinting. If the ink is opaque and the medium is glossy the print-out will look crap... To print on T-shirts and canvas bags I use a fabric medium, which will bleed very well into the fabric without stiffy paints on top. Iron the print-out for 5 minutes and it'll stay even after washing.
Though I don't know anything about dyes... (okay but tie-dye doesn't count) which works the best on Tenugui. Sounds very complicated to do manually with minimal equipments.
... Yet to find a place that sells "tenugui fabric"!!!
p.s. I have been screen-printing almost daily for the past 2 years.
p.p.s. and I hate all the Sanrio products. They are all made in China anyway...

I am just a lowly, non-bogu-wearing beginner and I don't know a lot about tenegui, but this I do know about textile printing. Tenegui are just like bandanas. They are white fabric that have been inked or dyed with a pattern, not silk-screened like t-shirts so that the ink is felt above the surface of the fabric.

speaking of tenuguis, one of my frens actually toyed with the idea of printing pink tenuguis for his club, as in shocking electric pink. wooh....i thought that was kinda a shocker, but i would want one too! i like collecting tenuguis....the more the merrier...

Tenugui are in fact silk screened. I have a book in Japanese about. However they are not done in the same way as what we are familiar with.
The pattern is cut out of a stiff, thick linen type material. It is placed over the cloth and screened.
If I have time I will get it translated and post the process if anyone is interested. I might even scan a couple pictures out of the book of the process and put them on the web.
The book has pictures of tenugui done for art. I was able to purchase a few of them at the showing.

I don't understand the print process myself, but I do know a printer and kendo-ka that USED to have a source for teneguie material (like you said, Neil). I say "used to," it had something to do with leftover material that he could then buy and run out 100 tenegui or something. He made a nice set for Detroit and I still have one of them. I'd love to be able to design my own but they are probably rather expensive, eh?
Neil Gendzwill
13th June 2003, 11:26 PM
It's not that they are expensive, it's that you have to get so many of them on a custom run to get a decent price. I don't think it's worth your while to get less than 500 or so.
Anarei
14th June 2003, 02:20 AM
actually cartoon character tenugui are really cute.... wat i object to is that they should not be shown to be doing kendo! the incongruity between the cuteness and the idea of serious kendo jus makes me laugh... :D i mean, sensei kitty? noooo.... wat kind of ki'ai would she have man? *shudders*
i see someone's snapped up the tenugui for 12.50... wonder if one of u guys has ordered it? :p
Anarei
14th June 2003, 02:27 AM
hmm... KML, either the 'no fear' guy was seriously trying to show his courage (or trying to give the impression of it) or he was using some kind of underhand trick to make yr sensei laugh... :) well, i'd give the guy the benefit of the doubt

Our club got a run of 100 through koei/bogubag. They were just simple black on white, but even with shipping, they worked out to be less than $5 each. 100 was the smallest batch they'd do by machine. Anything less than that and they would be done by hand, with a correspond jump in price.

Actually, I had no idea how tenegui are printed. I just needed to get my name on all topics in the kendo area of the forum. Anyway, that's nice to know. I can go into the tenegui/noren printing bidness.

Hmm, the size of the men is not proportionate with Hello Kitty's huge, out-of-proportion skull.
I don't see what the problem is with this product. Kendo is Japanese. Hello Kitty is Japanese. It only makes sense to combine the two.
