View Full Version : Where to sell used bogu

I have a beautiful bogu set that is white with a red do and gold decorative stitiching. I paid over $850 for it and was very happy when my day came to put on the bogu! However, after using it 1 time I had a severe attack of exercise induced asthma and collapsed. I did not know I had it at the time I bought my bogu.
I have been working with my allergist to get a diet and proper medication. However, after 6 months of this, I can not get it under control enough to continue practicing with a bogu on. (It's particulary scary when you can't get your inhaler through the men!) I have only worn the bogu 3 times total. There are no marks on it - only a little blue on the kote. It's a beautiful set and is very good quality. I need to sell it and I don't know where to go.
I don't want to clog up these boards with for sale posts, so was wondering if anyone out there knew of a good place to sell used bogu.
Thanks for your help!
PS - locally, not a good market for me to sell in. I'm in Hawaii and there are very few adults looking for new bogu.

Hi Tiki,
Very sorry to hear your asthma is having such an effect on your kendo. If you can afford it, I would recommend holding onto your bogu. Asthma is one of those conditions where there are multitude of treatments being developed all the time. You never know how you might feel in the future. And even if you can't continue, a beautiful set of bogu is a great thing to have in the family. Maybe you could pass it onto to your children or a niece/nephew.
all the best,
B.

Haha. Yes, that would have been my other bit of advice. Give it to Will.

I am very sorry to hear about your condition. On the other hand I am a Iaido/ Kendo Sensei, and have a couple of students that may be interested in your gear. Please write me with pricing and I will pass the information on. Best of health to you in the future.

Three weeks ago I was in a meeting with 2 guys who were smoking cigars. It was in someone's house and I couldn't tell them what to do. On the way home I started to wheeze and after about 3 days I was a wreck. After a course of Prednisone and using the inhaler for a few days I went back to training. At one point after a bout I started sucking for air and it seemed like I getting nothing. I ripped of my men and went out into the cold coughing my lungs out. I had that feeling, if I didn't get the men off, I'd die. It was really stressful. Fortunately, nothing has triggered it again and all is well. But, don't give up so quickly, as suggested, there is new stuff coming out every day.

Aloha, Tiki:
I, too, am located in Hawaii, Kaneohe to be specific. Although I am not a kendoka, my wife is kendo nidan, & needs someone to be a "practice dummy" so she can advance. I have just started looking for bogu, & am willing to dicker.
I am a Judo Sensei, by the way, as well as a Fencing Master, so I may enjoy the practice.
Mahalo nui!

I felt very out of air the first time with my men on. After that I started running to get a better condition. This improved my breathing a lot and I have little or no problems anymore. Though i don't have astma i feel that picking up endurance training could be of great benefit.

unlike in europe, u.s. is very non-smoker friendly. smoking is not allowed in most public places which means non-smokers never have to worry about sitting in a room full of smoke. some people do get very strong reaction to cigar smoke.
since i smoke everything that i could light with my bic it doesn't bother me.. but at the same time i feel for those who gets bothered by my smoke.

I don't think you would be laughing if it was you with asthma or reactive airway disease, and not being able to breathe.
The equation reads "No airway: you are dead." Period. End of story.
Guess which population is most at risk for this outcome.
Males between the ages of 13 and 23.... right when they think they're immortal and get cocky. They wait too long, and then it's too late. Right behind them are the females of the same age range.
Please remember this if you see someone who is short of breath: your airway can be 98% blocked off by swelling, a spasm, or a foreign object, and you can still get in good air. That last 2% can go in less time that it takes to read this sentence. Get First Responder training.
I am a trauma nurse who has seen this far too often.
