View Full Version : Of writing style and kendo

If you would indulge me, think about the people you know and think about the way they write on the forum.
Does their kendo match their writing style? Personality shows up in writing (and verbal fencing (did I say fencing?????)). Personality shows up in kendo (the way they fight).
Of the people you know do they match or not?
My take is that for the most part they kind of match up. Caution: Hot Coffee not always, but close enough. Analysis is not necessary a simple yes or no is okay.

I'm an idiot.
Put into wrong category, my apologies.

I doubt it. In my life experience most of the people who talk alot don't "do" much (not all - most). I watch the quiet ones more carefully because you don't get much information from them to anticipate their behavior.

:o Here! here! I have to agree. In my experience in life so far. Those who talk the talk, don't (usually) walk the walk as the saying goes.

I do think some people do talk as they walk. I also agree to watch the quiet ones. Like me :cross_eye

Some poeple I can almost imagine exactly what their kendo is like based on how they post. This is mostly with the more experienced people, like I can usually tell just from reading something if the person is a san-dan or yon-dan. It must be in the insights of technique and tradition they display.

I'll have to read some more of your posts to make a qualified guess. Off the top of my head: 1-kyu or just prepraring to test for 1-kyu.

Reading some of his other posts you'll find where he says he's ikkyu I think :)
My magic crystal ball (the search button on the top) tells me Charlie is nidan.

Charlie,
Hint, hint. Hongsermeier posted enough for you to figure his rank out. There are enough hints out there for you that he left.
Hongsermeier, I'll see you on Monday too if you don't mind. I would like the pleasure of practicing with you and your wife.
I was too slow, both your posts were not up when I started mine.

Haha! I can usually tell when someone's more experienced than me. It's not exact. Like, I first "met" Neil at e-budo and after reading some of his posts, thought, "He sounds like a yon-dan." Last time I looked, that's what he is. Somebody else, I forget who, started a topic and after a couple posts I thought, "Hm - either sandan or preparing to test for sandan." Sure enough, that's what he was, a san-dan. But it's not exact.
And, actually, I'm not that familiar with Hongsermeier-san. I am returning to the KW forums after a lengthy absence, so he's relatively new to me. That ikkyu thing was an honest guess!

I know your wife will kick my butt. That is okay.
If it is related to some of the trash I've laid out and offended her in some way, I've earned whatever comes my way. I accept that that too. But I hope I did not inadvertently offend your wife. I'm not rolling over though.

"It is said the warrior's is the twofold Way of pen and sword, and he should have a taste for both Ways."
-Musashi Miyamoto, The Ground Book
This forum is helpful in that it allws us to study the way of writing when we are not studying any of our other "various Ways." Sometimes the threads loose focus, but "Each man practices as he feels inclined."
Final answer: sometimes.

Often times those with the most bravado have the least to offer in reality I think. But I'd have to say there probably isn't a general rule.

I listen to the person and then I think, "Who does that remind me of? Oh, yeah, so-and-so. I wonder if he also is a ____ rank?" And I'm usually right!
Kenshi are like people. A young person will bluff his or her way through a conversation, claiming insights or knowledge of things they don't know. A person with a bit more experience will admit they don't know but give you his/her best guess. Masters will often look stoic and drop zen-like hints or little things that you don't realize at the time is a hint, while directing your attention elsewhere.
"Sensei, how will I become a great shiai competitor?"
"Drink this."
Pours you another beer.
"But..."
"Kampai!"

Yes, I have mastered walking and talking at the same time. Next up is the elusive walking and chewing gum. :cross_eye
