Is it neccisary? How is it useful? Does anyone think it slows you down, or that it is a bad idea?

As iīve been told, there is no proper kendo without beeing keen on how to do fumikumiashi.
It helps you to cross the distance to hit your opponent men, and it makes you faster when you attac. I donīt see why it should slow you down.

I think it's to help give you momentum for when you run through.

There was much discussion about this previosuly. Here is a good thread (http://www.kendo-world.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9640) to review.

Fumikomi is indicative of proper attacking footwork. It shows you have launched your entire body into the attack, that your hips are are not left lagging but rather are providing the driving momentum for a resounding strike as your whole body mass lands forcefully upon the right foot. Fumikomi shows full physical co-ordination and mental commitment to the strike.
How forceful is your attack without it?
