View Full Version : Free lessons for Mr Kurukuru

I made the offer before for everyone to go to Mr Kurukuru's practice and try to keiko with him in order to limit his smack talking.
Last night I went and gave him my all. With the expected results from a 2kyu going against a 4dan. He promptly handed me my head.
He can talk all the smack about me he wishes. Anyone else have the guts to try? :cross_eye

Non Kendo??
I thought a post about going to practice and learning was about kendo. I learned a few things last night in my time on the floor with Kurukuru.
I'm not here fighting with anyone. Just offering a chance to improve your kendo through practice. :cross_eye

You don't consider going to practice learning? I'm wondering where all your wonderful kendo knowledge is coming from.
Limiting his smack talking is just a way to appease the people here who complain about him. Go to his practice and shut him up.
And what have you learned latley? I would be glad to welcome you to any of our practices to both learn from and teach to you some of the finer points of shiai keiko. :cross_eye

I will now take the advice of many members and stay out of all Mr. Kuru, Hai_Hai, and maybe your post. Thanks you for the invitation, but I already have a Sensei.

I will miss chating with you. Not offering to be sensei. Offering to be sempai(spelling). If you don't at least look to see what is being said you could be missing some very good info. I don't agree with many things said here, but still try to read with an open mind. :cross_eye

I want to keiko with him because practicing keiko with a strong kenshi that can give me one heck of a "smackdown" will teach me how to improve my kendo instead of the other way around. I welcome it because there's no other way of getting better than getting my asphalt handed to me.

Hey Hongsermeier,
It was great meeting you last night. Although I don't think we got a chance to practice. I was going through sooooo many people I actually lost track.
That double line keiko is a killer though. Can't stand the tight quarters. But, Kurukuru loves it and nailed me time and time again :D
Normally, I'd do better against him but its hard to focus when you are worried about having people run into you because you're so close to each other. I'll have to go back to the drawing board and figure out how to deal with tight quarter Kendo :p
If you're ever in the area, you're more than welcome to stop by Gardena JCI on Fridays. This Friday we're closed because we have our carnival this weekend.
Peace...

TKO,
I thought that this post did talk about kendo. Hongsermeier went to kurukuru's dojo to play kendo. I thought he was only joking when he said that he was "going to limit his smack talking". It seems that you have taken it more as an insult to kendo and as an indication of a bar-room brawl. Oh well.. I guess I interpret things different from other people.
Also, you gotta go out into the world and play with other people. If you stay "stuck" within your own dojo, you are really limiting your experiences and your kendo education.

Tim I couldn't agree more....in NoCal and SoCal we are blessed to have a lot of Dojos and a lot of great Sensei and Kenshi. You can really learn alot of good kendo by getting out and visiting other Dojo's where they might be learning a fun technique other than what you get at your Dojo.
As for Brad it was fun watching Kurukuru toy with somebody besides me.....Did you see him give the bunny WAZA to Stephan?!?!?!!?!?! Damn, that was a loud CARRRAAAQUE:beard:

Looks like I’m the wimp. I did not practice with Kurukuru san or Tenken san.
I did practice with Shikai sensei though. My mind needs to get tougher to push through the stamina deficit. But I do agree with you all about getting out to other dojos. I was hot and overheated but after all was said and done, there was a sense of accomplishment from last nights practice. I am actually a bit sore today. It was a really good night. The aura was good. Gotta get together again, with Moocow too.
Hongsermeier, thanks for the loaner, I will return to you washed on Sunday. I did get to practice with you wife and she is tough.

I think the point is, by now a lot of forum members are so tired of Mr Kurukuru's style of writing and anything about Mr Kurukuru, that whenever they see the words "kurukuru" and "smack-down's," they get a gag reflex.
In point of fact, Mr Kurukuru has been a lot nicer lately, and as a consequence, there has been,I felt, fewer disruptive threads on the forum. I was glad, until I saw this new thread started up: the words "Kurukuru," "free lessons," and "smack-downs" combined together just sent my eyes rolling and thinking, "not again!"
Why does someone have to beat Mr Kurukuru in order for him to be less arrogant here? Among the people I practice with are former and current US Team members and a US National Champion (men's division, not little kids'). They are formidable in every keiko, yet they are humble and helpful always to everyone. I fail to see why all of us in the forum must travel to southern California and try to defeat someone in order to have a nice, constructive atmosphere here.

Here in bulletin board land, no one really has any clout except for the moderators (and sometimes people who kiss up to moderators to get them to do things). It doesn't really affect your personal life. You could live without this bulletin board. You can get a nice constructive atmosphere at your dojo for free.
Just from being on a couple of different bulletin boards, you don't have to take BBS seriously when you get people from anywhere in the world with fake identities. Take what you want and ignore the rest. This BBS is tame and Disney-like compared to others.

Hai Hai:
You're absolutely right. A forum is a forum and is not essential to life. But for those of us who really love kendo and who practice outside of Japan and Southern California, this forum is a valuable place and I at least (I'm not presuming to speak for all) would like this place to be as nice and constructive AS my dojo.

Hello,
I agree with slidercrank, since the only place i'm able to practice kendo is w/ our YMCA kendo club, this is the only place I really getta chance to talk to other kendoka outside of our group!
Thanks,

Slidercrank and Winter Wolf have figured out my original intent. To get people to practice at other dojo's (if possible). I enjoy practicing all over when I have the chance. Currently planning a trip to North Cal for a little fun. The smack talking is more like brothers than enemies. Some people don't seem to understand that. When I got out on the court with Kurukuru the first thing that happened was a big smile from him. Followed by a very good work out and some learning on my part. :cross_eye

No offense slider but I don't think anyone here is talking about beating or even thinking about beating the man called Kurukuru. The truth is we like to keiko with him because it's a big challenge, he pushes us hard and teaches us different techniques.....not just the standard waza. It's more like OS what is he gonna do now or WTF did he just do. I go into all keiko thinking what can I do to score against my opponent or leave keiko wondering why i got toasted and how in the heck can I avoid that next time, not who is smacking down who. As far as comming down to SoCal to keiko we would love to have you.......watch out though you might learn something....I know I would. :beard:

I guess the point is that someone's kendo skill level is not relevant to his behaviour here. Whether Mr. K. can clean my clock or not (I'm pretty sure he can, if he's a serious US team contender) or whether he has things to teach me kendo-wise (pretty sure he does) doesn't change my opinion on how he's conducted himself here.

Well, Hongsermeier says and I quote: "I made the offer before for everyone to go to Mr Kurukuru's practice and try to keiko with him in order to limit his smack talking." To me that certainly sounds like we all have to go keiko with Mr Kurukuru and one-up him "in order to limit his smack talking."
I have no doubt Mr Kurukuru is a very strong yondan and a stronger kendo player than I. His ability will lend him credence in his discussions of kendo, but does it give him rights to strut verbal arrogance about?
Hongsermeier
19th June 2003, 02:33 AM
No it does not give him any right to verbal arrogance. I do not believe it is meant seriously or to offend anyone. Like I also said earlier it is like two brothers trying to one-up each other. If you beat someone, you have the"braging rights" so to say. Like I remind m french once in a while how I have beaten him the only time I faced him in a taikai. I'm sure one day that will change(hopefully not soon). :cross_eye

Down boy...........is it not possible that you are all taking this Crap a little to seriously? We're all about kendo here! just because some of us may have more warped senses of humor or different idioms in our speech does not make us out to be jerks, you gotta read between the lines or ignore us your choice, but don't get your dander up unless you know us in person. And don't be sooooo easily offended or high and mighty....geeeez loosen up. :beard:

First part: Some fun huh.. I'm actually starting basics again so I advise you to stay away from me. :D
Second part: Damn straight. Some people are a "bit too rigid" if you know what I mean. We're all friendly here. But part of that brotherly love involves the smack talk. hahahahaha

Slidercrank's got a point. I think the folks here in California (Kurukuru leading the pack) have yet to realize that a lot of people in&outside US count on things like this forum to give them kendo content and not "Yo, I'm gonna kick your butt" comments. And they/we hope for a minimum of wisdom. I guess the expectations are completely different. Maybe a separate, more "international" forum is needed ?

Well it doesn't take me hundreds of posts to figure out that trash talk leads nowhere. Here, I'm merely pointing out that there are two separate groups with separate views on how a kendo forum should be used (Forums 101):
1- exchange content, ideas & thoughts with people you probably will never get to meet
or
2- chat about local events with your buddies
In the few topics I've read so far the vast majority fall under #2.
I'm not telling you what I like or not, I just wish you were a bit more sensitive to that. You either care or you don't.
Eddy
And Yes, I do miss Kurukuru's posts ;-)
