Double sword form for fun- tournament
Hello all,
I am looking for a double wakizashi kata. (...give time for groans to subside...). Now before everyone starts telling me to find a qualified teacher, I already have a great deal of training under numerous teachers. (I'm not the best, but I get by ). I also have some experience with Nito long/short styles.
No what I'm looking for is simply a really neat tournament kata. Sometimes its just fun to do; something flashy and frivolous. I have been studying for a long time, but immersed in tradition for a few years now, and something light would be nice, even if its not too practical. Maybe even a two person form would be nice. Definately Hollywood, but not too out there to teach bad habits.
I'm waaaaay too old to start doing jumpy, flippy gymnastics but I can get a little aerial.
This is time to suspend our tradition, and stuffiness, and lets think jedi for just a moment. Have fun.

...I don't get it. Are we supposed to flame him or something? The guy admitted that he's just looking for something flashy and fun. It's not like he's looking for a Hiten Mitsurugi-Ryu school or something.

Oh I dunno. I thought it was fantastic that he was wanting to "find" a flashy kata. Why not make it up? Does he want the credibility of being able to say that "this is a kata from Naninani Ryu"? Who was he hoping to teach him? Is there a school out there that specialises in "flashy tournament kata"? Do they sell them on eBay? The questions are endless. He has a "great deal of experience in different styles". What style? What school of kendo/kenjutsu teaches people that go on to want to perform kata to music with lycra Old Glory gi pants? My head is literally spinning with unanswerable questions...

Seems to me that he was just looking for a flashy katana for whatever he does.

I'm getting curious as to why senior members here are actually starting to post threads by trolls and misguided people from OTHER message boards on KW.
Isn't there enough of that crap on this message board without having to import more of it? Seriously though, are we suppose to feel fantastically superior of all of a sudden because this person wants to learn something useless and is a little off-kilter?

Well, the guy is likely a karate guy like you see in the Disc. chan. XMA show. If a person just had to reply to him, a person might just tell him that traditional swordarts don't have any of the tricks he's asking for, and leave it at that. No need to make fun of him. He's sincere and honest, at least. Not that I didn't get a laugh out of this though... :D Whatever planet he's on, he's happy I guess. :)
I do see your view though, but he's really probably just a tournament karate guy with "experience" in sword work, meaning not what we'd consider having real experience.
Ah well...

OK, OK, so I should stop sniggering. But he did post this in a Japanese sword arts forum, not an XMA forum. And besides, I get sick of being po-faced and serious all the time. And it is in the flames section, which means that it's a pretty disposable thread topic. And it's school holidays, so I've got more time to waste than normal...

No worries Ben. I have not been here as long as some of you but as far as I can remember AlexM has always ridden a very high horse.

High horse indeed... better than getting trampled underfoot by the mob :P
Ben has been around these boards since before I have: He's always been courteous, a great source of info and one of the posters one could respect from the early days of the forum. I thought the scales and suburi analogy from another thread was brilliant. He's got plenty of slack to work with and doesn't need my approval or forgiveness for bringing *shudder* XMA *shudder* to KW. I was surprised that he of all people would do that kind of thing in fact.
But man, people have been feeding the trolls around here like it's nobody's business recently: including actually baiting them in other places to join this forum... *cough* ScottUK *cough*. It's one thing to smack trolls around when they actually show up but just bringing it in from the outside is a bit much.
This is a forum dedicated to kendo where people claim to seek humility and worship at the feet of "rei" (something I personally can't claim do to). But I'm seeing a lot of experienced kendoka here, who claim to espouse these virtues, that seem to post with just one idea in mind: make the other guy feel smaller and dumber. For the record, I don't think Ben is one of them but he did essentially post a sort of "let's all laugh at this dumb f***er" thread: not the most edifying thing to see in budo.
Kendo World is becoming closer to e-budo in atmosphere, that is no way a compliment.
Hey I like feeling superior to others as much as the next guy, actually probably more, but why here?

I agree we have enough wannabes and trolls as is, but if Ben felt like saying "Hey, look at this dumb f@cker" he did it in the right place. This is the Flames section and he didn't invite the guy.
Also I am sorry about the 'high horse' comment, that was uncalled for.

If he had been an out and out nutbag then I probably wouldn't have even glanced at his thread. Ironically it was the quite respectful tone of his enquiry that threw me. Which makes it doubly bad that I should laugh. *Protrates himself* "SHITSUREISHIMASHITA!!"
Let's close this thread and let it die.

Not until you disembowel yourself... yeah, you heard me.
I've been called worse than that Viking. At least you had the courtesy to say it to my face... kind of... through the internet. Most people aren't even that polite, or brave, depending on how you see things. :devious:

well, like in most forum threads, they start out pretty much on topic, but as more posts get put on, the topic becomes more and more vague. if you try skipping from page one to three in most threads, you wont know what the hells going on :silly:

*cough* ScottUK *cough*Oops OK - will keep my cross-forum troll-baiting to a minimum...
(sorry for the thread necromancy, but I have only just noticed this...)

If the guy is looking for a Kata with more show biz flash, then perhaps looking for a guy in show biz might be a start?
Perhaps a juggler, or perhaps one of them troops of people that come out of China and perform stunts.
I believe that I watched a TV show last year about a guy learning and inventing some sword moves for a sword event that he was in. His teacher and him came up with great moves, but I think in the end he didnt win first place.
