View Full Version : All Japan Kendo Champs Terminology

I recently recieved a DVD box-set that I ordered from a notable company in the Kendo arena. The 3 box DVD set was advertised as "The 1982 All Japan Championships". So here I am thinking excellent...I finally get to see the Ishida (from the Hachidan Documentary) bouts. In the Doco they show you snippets of his winning bout etc.

Anyway, when the DVD's arrived I started watching them and realised that Ishida is no where to be seen. When my Japanese GF arrived home she explained that the Kanji in the title is actually the "1982 All Japan Senbatsu Yusho Daikai", which is another major comp held in Japan anually. Needless to say I felt a little dissapointed but the material I did have is still great so I plan to keep it anyway.

Upon e-mailing the company about the way it looks to a non Japanese speaker on the website I was told:

I am sorry to hear such a misunderstanding.
Actually, the title of the DVD is 1982 All Japan Senbatsu Yusho Daikai
.
Yusho Daikai means Champion Ship .

I am sorry, I cannot see well the difference you indicated.

In any way, we are pleased to know you like our merchandises, but I
feel
sorry for the misunderstanding.

What do you think? Was I mislead? and what is the Japanese terminolgy for "THE All Japan Champs"??

All Japan Kendo Championships is "Zen Nihon Senshuuken Taikai". This is what most foreigners know as the "All Japans". It's the one Miyazaki won 6 times, held at the Nippon Budokan each November. (sorry I can't write the kanji for you, for some reason I can see it in preview, but when I click submit, it changes to "???????")

I too noticed that Ishida sensei was absent from this DVD box set. But how good is Sakurai senshuu, the eventual winner? His men-uchi, "hoshiiiiii!!".

全日本剣道選手権大会 is the kanji Ben was trying to post.

Yusho (優勝) means to win. What you bought wasn't the AJKC, it was the 30th anniversary championship which was held with all the former champions of the previous AJKC. If the below is the correct video, then they were mistaken in their translation.

*EDIT: Sorry I should elaborate more on Yuusho. Yuushou means victory, in verb form to win or be victorious. If you add the sufix sha (者 person) it would mean victor.

Sakuraigi is brilliant....absolutely brilliant. Ono Sensei was also a very strong competitor and I think he gave Sakuraigi a run for his money the whole way. His Kote-men was the stuff of gods.

There's no denying that it's a great DVD....but still....I wanted to see Ishida...he is my hero. I think the company should realise it's mistake and change the wording on the advertisement. It's alot of money to spend on a DVD, you should get what you are after, or what you think you are after.

My bad. Sakuragi it is, not Sakurai. I believe Hyaku knows him vaguely, being from Saga ken.

I have watched the DVD set these days and enjoyed the whole thing a lot.
Not only because there's a lot of good jodan going on (Chiba, Toda), but also because I finally had a chance to see for the first time Kawazoe in action.

Nice.

Theres a couple of 8dan competitions as well... the one we all think of the "All Japan 8dan Comp" (and advertised as such on the FIK website) is actually a "senbatsu" as well..... fyi

Thanks for the heads up George. On that note...is the Kendo no Senbatsu hold every year also, or is it a special occasion thing?

On the subject of the DVD (which I still pull out occasionally), it's interesting to note the differences in Kendo then and Kendo now, or more specifically Shiai. It's almost worth starting a thread over...+Ponders+

The 8dan is every year... I could look up the other. There are so many shiai happening over here... the "main" ones as far as the ZNKR are concerned are listed here (http://www.kendo.or.jp/competition/index.html). The 7dan taika that Eiga has been winning is also a senbatsu.

p.s. "senbatsu" means "selected"

An "invitational", in other words?
