So today I got this most beautiful sune hit from waki-game. It stunned everyone. After returning from the circle my sensi turned to me and said sternly:
"Now you know I'm not sure if that was a valid point. But it was so very there!"
So my question to all of you is: what do you think? Would this strike have been a valid point?

I am pretty sure that sune from waki is a valid point. Maybe your sensei meant that it is not often taken. If it is not a valid point I think it should be.... mostly because I like using it. ^_^

The Shimpan were caught off-guard.
Waki Gamae is the starting point for Do-uchi in order to move the blade horizontally to the target. Chudan, Jodan and Hasso no Kamae are the starting points for Sune-uchi - the blade is moved in a very steep vertical angle to the target. That's what the Shimpan are looking for.
I do not have the Rules&Regs in front of me, but your strike does not conform to anything I have ever seen in the Atarashii Naginata syllabus.
To be sure, your move is unorthodox. However, logically, it works - it would certainly be devastating using a live blade. :D

Realy? Bummer.... I always enjoyed that tricky little move. Although not often taken as points, reverse sune and ishizuki sune are valid; those two are really more horizontal than vertical.

Wow. I am thrilled to see that everyone who has so far voted has infact voted in favour of awarding the point. :D
I was discussing it today with Webb Sensi and he says that it was brought up as a matter of fact at the 3WNC. Apperantly it is infact discouraged in formal bouts etc. Which is fine with me. Although I would be pleased to see it become recognized as valid in the future. Anyways he encouraged me to keep it in my informal repetroire. And I will cause you guys all know; it's a schwwwweet move. :D
i love this waza ("waki gamai waza";))
you can strike from a realy long distance,it make a beautiful sound and you have 99% to receave a flag for it
just do it!!!

While we do not see an sune-strike from waki gamai in the Shikakeojii forms a similar strike exists in the 7th ZNNR kata. The cut is taken from Tendo Ryu if I am not mistaken.
The strike is a perfect wasa to me and I see absolutely no reason for not making it count. There is no risk to the opponent, the strike is easy to see and judge and, as Phil said, it makes a beautiful sound.

As far as I know this is a valid point as Waki Kamae is a valid kamae in shiai, So any strike from Waki(kote ,men, dou, sune) would be valid (Dependant on the judge of course)
Engi's ropponmen uses Waki kamae men
However, it is exceedingly hard to do in shiai and score a clean point.
It does work well in Isshu jiai though (naginata vs kendo) as it functions exactly as Waki should by hiding the length of the weapon from the kendo ka, and drawing him into what he thinks is a safe distance. ( I know I've used it effectively before)

it is valid, we, in Belgium, used it a lot at the last world championship. The only thing Fukuda sensei told us about it is : "it's a long way to the sune" which probably mans that Japanese fighters prefer direct strike in sune. And "while doing it, pay attention to the position of the ha, because you're not cutting a sune as you are cutting a do !".
But crossed sune are not allowed anymore
