Hi,

I'm looking at buying a new sword or blade or iaito or what every you wish to call it.

In order to practice Kendo Kata. Does anyone have ideas or suggestions where I can get one from ???

I know using a more realistic blade will, highlight many problems with my Kata, such as suriagi, and how it should be performed correctly instead of just hitting the boukto.

But this is one of the reasons I want one practice with a more realistic blade.

Hi Gareth

There is a company in the UK that imports some excellant blades from Japan.

http://www.barringtons-swords.co.uk

Their web site is under construction at the moment but there is a tel # etc.

They have Japanese blades with full furniture from a range of prices according to the type of blade you want. I have seen (at the SENI in Birmingham) the blades for my self. They did a very good starter blade that is alloy but still a quality Japanese product for £137.00. This includes Saya and all the other relevant furniture. They are well balanced as well wich is rare at the cheap end of the market! If it is just for "SOLO" Kata then I am sure this type of blade would be good. Hope this helps.

Hi Gareth,

Dont know anything about Barrington Swords other than the webpage, so I cant comment on them.

Please check out www.swordstore.com (or nosyiaido.com) the american branch of the nosyuiaido company based in seki city, japan.

I got my current iaito there 4 years+ ago, and the service/quality was great. You will pay more than 137 quid for it, but there are extensive options + made to measure blade etc. Plus the Iaito are nicer than "kendo kata katana" that some places sell.

Anyway, check it out.

On re-reading your post I see you want to get the sword to practise kata with ... make contact and such like? Hmmmm, not sure then .....

Oh, and there is nine circles in the uk : http://www.ninecircles.co.uk/

Thanks for the website I've rung them and they are going to send me a catalogue.

George McCall

Cheers for the advise, I do actually have an Iaito but I obviously don't want to use it for Kendo Kata. So I'm trying to find one that is quite well priced the best I've found is about £250 from Ninecircles. One of the guys I train with (Mark Needham you may know him) has just order one from America but I think it was quite a lot more.

Are you giong to Stoke ? If you are I will come and say hello.

I believe that iaito is not appropriate for kendo kata due to the impact of some practices like Odachi #4 and all the kodachi ones.

The folks at e-bogu (www.e-bogu.com) and bogubag (www.bogubag.com) have a reinforced kendo kata yo that suits your need and is not that expensive. Try it and tell me.

PS. about the game today, we'll see about that 2 x 1 you told me in the other thread :D

Alex - you'll be happy to know that we are watching the game in my office tomorrow morning. Being Scottish I will be supporting BRAZIL !!! Heh heh heh.... I think its going to be an easy 4-0 for the boys in yellow ................

George - Have you fenced Mark since he got back form Japan ? he has got alot better. I wish I could say the same for me. I should be at the Bowden and the Premier cup, so I'll come and see you if I'm there. You'll have to go easy on me I'm, only Shodan.

Alex - I said it would be 2 - 1 it was just the wrong way round..........BUGGER !!!! cheers for the info I will have a look at their site.

Gareth - Oh, 'twas a nice match. I've been reading UK newspapers on the net to day, it seems that you guys are very sad. It happens you know, I' m just sorry that it wasn't the final game. Anyway, see you in 2006.
PS- Don't buy kendoshop's kendo kata sword. I've seen one bend 90° on Odachi #4, don't ask me how.

George - It seems that you're some kind of lucky charm you know? Please watch the next 2 games and I'll pack some gorgeous samba dancers and send them to you thru TNT, just be ready to pay the customs clearance :D

Cheers :D
