View Full Version : Repairing a TARE?

Hi,
I may be the only one who's ever had this problem but I'm starting to rip my SECOND tare where the cloth is attached to the leather. This could be due to both the fact that I tie my tare really tight and because I am abysmally fat. The last tare I ripped, I fixed in a rather haphazard way. This time, I would like to do a decent job. Do I need to restitch the whole thing or can I get away with just placing a cloth patch where the obi is starting to rip?

TIA

Where exactly is it starting to rip? Can you post a picture? How old is your tare? The more information you can provide the easier it is for people to answer.
My first tare was of extremely poor quality, and my do was slowly tearing up the middle flap. Just from rubbing against it during zarei or sonkyo.

A strong cloth like denim, or even leather, can work well as a patch/reinforcement.

Maybe you could also sew an extension onto your obi so that it can be tied comfortably and not too tightly. Denim from an old pair of jeans should work well here. Make sure you hem the fabric, then sew it into a tube-like shape, before attaching to the end of your obi. This will make sure it has rthe strength to last a while.

while denim is suitable to patch tare himo as ben said, i would not suggest using it to lengthen them. denium is too heavy and thick. it would make it difficult to tie and add unwanted bulk. a high thread count cotton, much like what it is make out of, would be a better option. i have often thought of buying ebogu's outlet hakama ($35.00) to cut up, just to make repairs. actually my last hakama i bought extra long, partly to have some of the fabric for repairs.

as for making the repairs to your tare, i would recommend patching over the seam where the cotton attaches to the leather. it does not have to a large piece, 5-7cm should be enough. stitch the edges and then stitch the 4 rows of stitching running the length. try to use a stitch length that matches what is already on your tare. stitches too close together can weaken fabric and can certainly "cut" the leather.

My tare is about 7 years old and was a custom job because it was so big. I think it's a 1 bu but as it was a gift from my father I wasn't going to ask and haven't really looked... It's seen quite a bit of action but is still relatively pristine. The rip is right about where the cotton is stitched onto the leather of the tare. The rip is frighteningly similar to the one that killed my previous tare. That one was about 20 years old when I got it and I used it for about 10 years. I was really upset about the slipshod job I did repairing it as it was used by both my father and his sensei before I shredded it. I repaired it and used for a couple of months before I got the one I ripped now.

I will post a picture of the tare's tonight as soon as I get home from the office.

Thank you all for your kind input.

I never made it out of the office last night:down: ...

Tried to upload a pic from the cell phone but no luck. I apparently cannot upload. Will ask Moderator.

Thank you all for your very helpful comments.
