What happen to all the members that post regularly?…. After Confound was exiled all the sudden discussion is now narrow to most California members only!? I wonder if all the old members are tired of nonsense posts and look elsewhere for source of kendo knowledge.

If you take the time to read them there are some very informative threads here.
If you want more people to come here to provide info for you, tell them about this site. In our dojo there are about 100 people. There are 2 or 3 of us who come on here. Promote this site to your kendo friends and get them to come in here and discuss things. Don't just sit back and bitch about the guys from Cal. :cross_eye

I think that good discussions come in waves. Sometimes there a lot of good threads and so many of the regulars will post a lot of good kendo knowledge. When the waves go away for awhile, then lots of goofy, nonsense threads pop up, but after awhile, people will think of more good questions again, and the wave of good kendo knowledge returns.

I think it is the natural way of this forum for good discussions to come and go because as good questions get answered, you need time to think up more good questions.

The California people always post the same amount and litter lots of threads. I just think that we are on the low side of good threads right now, so the California people seem more prevelant. We just need to wait for some more good threads to pop up and the kendo knowledge will appear again.

My request to the California people, you are in the most abundant kendo region of the US, so please share you knowledge. If you want a thread to only discuss California events that the rest of us can't participate in, that's fine, but please contribute useful information to the other threads too. Not trash talking or humor, but actual kendo info to answer people questions.

I am sure we can learn a lot from you guys, but that requires you guys to be willing to share some of your knowledge with the rest of us.

Good points nodachi....There are some very good threads out there, Developing seme, tournament types, bogu reviews to name a few. There are also the BS ones, Miss Universe, women only. It's usually easy to tell from the title if your interested. :cross_eye

PS Miss Universe is WAY hot.

As a non-bogu wearing beginner with over 275 posts :ninja:, I also have participated in various other BBS.

There's always a group of people from the same area who add a lot of local-only based replies. It's just another avenue of communication. I was on this one BBS for awhile, it was moderated to some extent. You go there because you have one thing in common, you are a fan of this musical entertainer. But, I got to talk to a couple of people who lived in an area where I lived.

Oh no! Not humor....quick call out the fun police...let's nip this humor thing in the bud before it spreads and infects the world?

Give me a break.

Nodachi, there are a lot of people who post here who talk about personal or non kendo related things, it's not just those dreaded Californians. And as far as the humor goes there are some very people here who are not from So Cal ( okay it's mainly the Canucks and Aussies, but they are funny (bunny w/ pancake...need i say more)).

What is really getting annoying though is all the complaints about the SCI and content and I want to learn....hey you want to improve content??? did your computer come with a key board???
Start asking some questions. Did you ever have one of those old school sensei who won't give you information until you ask the question? What makes you think this is any different? A forum is only as good as the questions you ask....If you want to learn, you have to seek advice it's not going to come to you.

Alright I'm done, abuse me if you will:beard:

Just an observation. There have been 5 posts saying "No", and 4 of us have posted our feelings. Where are the chicken*#&$ 12 people who say "yes" yet are afraid to post why. Stand up for yourself. :cross_eye

I don't see the problem. It seems like the SCKF members have made the most of this forum and brought the SoCal community a little closer. Instead of complaining, why don't you try doing the same thing for your area.

Argh. Has been a while since I last post, but things hasn't changed much.

The Bogu Review thread started off quite well... but then half way thru it almost got ruined... So later on when people check there will be contentless posts running in the middle.

Needless to say, if there are only local people chatting about "will you be in my Dojo next Sunday?", why do you think the others will want to participate in? I, for one, never even bother to look at those forums which are full of trashtalk. What is "this is just like any other forum"? No, it wasn't before you are here. Ever notice local-talks only exist after the SCI?

Flaming with Confound or Kurukuru is still relevent in a kendo discussion, but local-talks are not. I do "general chat" with my locals in the pub, and not here.

Speaking about informative threads. There aren't many recently. There certainly aren't many good ones coming from the SCI. Or at least their bad posts outnumbered the good ones by a large fraction.

So yeah. The poll result does say something we all know.

A quick point in regards to the point made about “local talk”. Actually I think there is nothing wrong with it. However, I do think that “local talk” should remain within Private Messages. I mean what the hell else are they meant for? There is no plausible explanation to starting up a whole new thread just to say “err…hey dude, you gonna be at practice err..like next week or sum-thing?”. Some people may argue to death that it is a kendo related thread just because the word “Kendo” was mentioned…oooo, wow  . Err...am I missing something here or what? Please…these types of threads are not beneficial to the whole community. If there are a small community of people that wish to talk with one another, which only concerns them, then I suggest you either keep to Private Messages or you start up your own forum and you can endlessly talk about whether Miss universe is hot or not. But if you’re sole intention is to come here and only harass people then that is just simply sad.

Mingshi,

Chill... Many here in So. Cal. don't exactly live close enough to each other to go to a pub with each other. The SCKF goes from Santa Barbara to San Diego.

Santa Barbara is a good hour and half to two hours north of LA and San Diego is three hours to the south. Even though the majority of us are in LA we live in the County of LA... NOT the city of LA!

The county alone takes anywhere between two to three hours to travel the entire width of the county WITH traffic. Unfortunately, our city planners didn't do Jack about our traffic problems years ago so now to travel a mere 20 miles can take anywhere from 30 to 60 miniutes.

We don't have the subways of New York, the Underground of London or the extensive subways and railways of Japan here. We have to rely on our cars to get from point A to point B. Many of us have day jobs that we go to so traveling around in LA is a real pain in the butt! It takes a real commitment to battle the traffic and get to a dojo ON TIME!!!

Hey, it's great that you can get together with your buddies at a pub afterwards and wind down. For some of us here in LA we have to worry about travel time and watch how much alcohol we consume because the cops here can take our license away if our blood alcohol content exceeds the legal limit.

So before you start mouthing off about keeping "local talk" in the pubs. I suggest that YOU get you butt over here and sit through a day of LA traffic in your car going to work and then go to Kendo battling that same traffic. Just because we are "local" doesn't mean that we all live close enough to hang out at a pub.

This forum for many of us is a great way to touch base with those who we met at a tounament or at a dojo. We can all participate by seeing what we posted and comment on it or do a little small talk.

This forum has allowed me to keep in touch with certain people or keep track of certain people in LA. I have stuff that I do that sometimes make it difficult for me to pop off an email or pick up the phone. But at least here I know that I'll be able to find them and keep in touch.

As forums get larger, you will have people break off into small groups because they have things in common or by region.

You may think that the local information is not very useful. But look at it this way, local talk shows how vibrant a particular region is. There is a thread that was started by people on the East Coast of the US about a taikai that happened this past sunday. People from Canada had a couple threads that were regional in nature. For many in this forum they have found this to be a convinient way to relay information and local info.

Those people have found a way to make this forum work for them. So rather than complaining about the local chatter that goes on you find a way to make this forum work for you. Look at the different communities that HAVE gathered here.

So. Cal is the more vocal of those communities, but we are not the only ones here. Thanks to this fourm, I'm now MORE aware that there are other vibrant Kendo communities around the world. When I get the chance I want to go there and visit those places.

I thank the moderators for setting this forum up because now I know that all of you exist out there. Someday, I want to go there and meet with all of you.

So stop complaining and start make this forum work for you. And with regards to the "trolls" -- just ignore them. All they want is attention.

Peace.

Kawai Sensei... A little long winded, but very well put. I know I travel over 60 miles one way to get to practice. For those that don't live around here thats about 1 1/2 hours each way not to mention that's on work days. :cross_eye

If you want to look elsewhere for kendo knowledge, why don't you subscribe to the Kendo World Magazine? Now there's a novel idea. I wonder how many of the wining complainers about the forums are actually subscribers....

mingshi,

sorry for making such a pointless post. Somebody said something about sweat, so i couldn't resist replying. I couldn't really say anything about my bogu except it works pretty well, and was given to me by my teacher, but who wants to hear something like that, especially you and all the other people that think all my posts are not worth posting.

Alex...That's usually the first thing I ask when kenshi ask me about info." Have you ever heard of Kendo World?". From there I tell them about the forums. First be informed, then ask questions. :cross_eye

Exactly. I was thinking of starting a poll on this very question. If you don’t want any interruptions during your kendo studies... Kendo World is the place to go. Besides the best way to show appreciation for all the benefits this Forum offers us is to help promote the magazine and at least subscribe. For those of you on here without subscribing to the magazine then I gotta tell you it is worth every penny, pound or yen of your hard earned cash.

The Forum is a series of evolving dialogue and off topic things are going to happen. Just recall any of your kendo conversations at the pub - it’s organic. I understand the desire to keep things from getting too far off or turning into a personal conversations. Maybe we all could try harder to use the PM system when replys start going off too far or start a new thread before the topic ends up changing completely? However, for the occasional reply/thread you’re not interested in, skim on by. If the thread seems silly to you don’t go there. There are plenty of good ones.

Personally, I enjoy the forum very much. There is lots of good information here. So what if sometimes I have to skip through stuff to find it. I can feel a kinship with kenshi around the world, learn from their input and even get tips on their style which may come in handy if I ever am lucky enough to spar with them. :) This far outweighs any sifting I may do. Also without KWF I wouldn’t have the chance to meet other “locals”. Especially those from other Federations. People can become more than a name at a tournament and friendships can be built.

So even if we all got booted out to another Forum, I still come by here. Segregation wont work. There’s enough divisiveness in the World today as it is; let’s lighten up, be more considerate and enjoy all the good that KWF has to offer.
