I have today uploaded the Koryu Kata Seigan to Youtube.

As you will see Koryu Seigan is very different from Seitei Seigan.

Santa Monica Jodo group practices the style of Jodo as see in this video.

Shimizu Takaji and Kuroda Ichitaro perfoms Kata Seigan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpWw7_rkHUA)

Thanks for putting the link up...I didn't know there is so many Jodo related vids on youtube. Now I do.

I haven't gone on to Koryu yet as i am still trying to get Ran-ai down before moving on to Omote (1st set of Koryu?). But it seems that, besides the increase of speed and aggression, the only differences are that the Uchi follows through more on the cut to the wrist of the Shi which enables the Shi to hit the head rather the chest. And also some minor differences with the tachi's nikitsuke.

Can you fill me in on any other major differences? Or correct me on my observations?

For those of you who practise Seitei Jodo and are familiar with the last of the 12 selected kata called 'Ran-Ai' I have uploaded a very rare chance to see the it's companion Koryu kata 'Kodachi Ran-Ai'

Shimizu Takaji and Kuroda Ichitaro perfom kata 'Kodachi Ranai' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8v6jmBXNeo)

Apart from the obvious difference (ie. using kodachi), it looks like there's no step forward on the strike part of the Do-barai-uchi like there is in Seitei - the kodachi is actually being swept aside, as opposed to uchidachi getting out of the way... And no strike to suigetsu following that...

Nambu San,

It seems like you only want to add something to a thread if it is of personal profit to yourself or your cause (i.e advertising Seminar). It almost borders on spam.

If you want to promote Jodo why will you not help to answer the questions posted above?

How ridiculous and immature.

What 'profit' do I get from spending time editing and then posting the Kodachi ran-ai video on youtube. What seminars have I advertised except to say we would demonstrate Jodo anywhere that asked us. We are not asking for money. I just wanted to start some interest in Jodo.

I won't argue with you on the internet. It's childish. From now on I'll spend my time training. Luckily I have a good teacher and good training partners.

So Mr. Fudo-shin as you gave requested I will not post anymore on this forum. Good luck with your Jodo.

I did not mention anything of the type.

And the scathing pm you sent in regards to my post is simply petty, childish and extremely insulting.... How dare you?...no matter what stance you have in the Jodo community. Do you think Jodo in Australia is just a few cowboys swinging around sticks?

As I implied earlier in this thread, Mr. Nambu, I am very grateful for you putting up the Koryu videos on youtube. If you want to promote Jodo why not also answer the questions that have been mentioned in the previous few posts? Or do you "bump" this thread as you did the other (http://www.kendo-world.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11387) one.

I will argue with you no more Mr. Nambu, sorry to have offended you with my previous post, but could you please help to answer the questions and get this thread back on track?....Which was my goal in the first place.

Sorry to all who would have liked to see the clips. Some people are very sensitive and take things too far. I'll keep my mouth shut in future.

Ohhh shooot....I won't be coming to Nationals this year. Maybe you could take a photo of the bikky and post it on here?

But make sure it's not a stiff bikky or I might spit chips.

Wow....LOL....this thread has gone off the rails completely.

Sad about my poor amalgamation of 2 colloquial Australian phrases?? Or sad that I am not coming to Jodo Nats?

Newbie

No, sad you aren't coming to the Nats. I promise I'll send you that bikket.

So, who is coming?

I gave my cat a cuddle and he ate my head. I have puncture marks on my ear. And my shoulder hurts. Have already iced it this morning. Flexall is my friend.

To take it back away from videos....

So, who is coming?

As of last Friday, not me..... work has spoken. :( Not good - miss the opportunity to challenge again at jo (after the schmozzle I made of it this year) and remind the sensei I exist and am trying before my next iai grading in 08.

On the plus side so far everything is good for my next training trip to Japan in March. A couple of weeks training with my SMR sensei should help me get over my jealousy of Bob/Ian etc who are going to the nationals :).

So, Newb, I expect to see big improvement in January, eh?

Newbie

*whimper*

It's a little hard unless this stupid shoulder settles down. It was good, it was fine. I was doing suburi even (well, some. Just not anything that has a men-high tenouchi). Then Friday, took all my gear to work all excited and revved up for a good night of training. By lunch time I was off my face on painkillers and trying to ice my shoulder with a coke can. Not allowed to train till Wednesday and then can only do reduced training.

So... err... yeah.. umm... not sure how much improvement there will really be if my training keeps getting interrupted like this :( :( :(

What is it my sensei always say? Black belts don't feel pain, only agony! So start getting used to it ;)

Seriously but, don't put yourself out cause of your back, and don't beat yourself up if you don't manage to get much training before the seminar - as long as you keep yourself good enough to be able to train at the seminar. That week of training there will more than make up for your time off!

Umm.. we're distracting this thread from being a flame war. And having a good ol' generic chat about jodo. Not like we get to do that as much as the kendo and iaido guys.

Yeah, was meant to do light iai training tonight but my back's been spasming all day. Not allowed to do jo. See the physio on Monday though. Ha! He was meant to be checking on my shoulder's progress after increased training. So much for that. *sigh*

Oh yeah, I wanna do a desktop background jodo pic. Have the pic and composition all worked out but wanted some profound saying to go with it. Genosuke wasn't known to have said anything cool and jodo like was he? I thought "Nyah-nyah nyah-nyah-nyah Gennosuke beat (or was at least rumoured to, okay maybe did, not really sure but there's at least the possibility well.. perhaps at least a draw.. maybe) Musashi" but didn't think that would quite do.

Failing anything said by Gennosuke, does anyone know of some cool, contemplative saying that relates directly to jo, rather than sword or budo in general?

Fred27

Thats "Gonnosuke", not Gennosuke :)

Hm..."cool, contemplative saying"...how bout: "Dont get hit...it hurts"! Not very contemplative, but still truth! :p

hm..well a long time ago I found a quote that was supposed to come from Shimizu Sensei. I use it in my sig at e-budo forums.

"Jodo should be done to build one's character"....."jodo should be like a steering wheel. The road is life. And there are all kinds of ways one can go down the road. Use jodo to steer as straight a course as possible through life"

I cant find the source for it, and its prolly not a direct quote but a merger of two or more quotes.

This could work. Actually, it'd be fantastic but it's for a piccie and I don't wanna get in trouble or get anyone else in trouble

Have the pic and composition all worked out but wanted some profound saying to go with it.
"Development is not merely a matter of technique."
"Do not be jubilant in victory; do not become servile in defeat."

Both of those are ones that I liked (and so remembered), courtesy of Nishioka Tsuneo from Diane Skoss' Sword and Spirit. If I remember correctly, His article in Sword and Spirit was about the roles of uchidachi and shidachi in Shinto Muso Ryu.
