Hi

How much different between 1 bu and 1.2 bu in term of dulability, hardness of stitch (stiffness) and protection?

Also why many of the most expensive hand stitch bogu in Japan that cost more than 1million yen are to either 1.5 bu or 1.2 bu rather than 1 bu?

Also I saw from a lot of previous thread that for those who has hand stitch bogu that many of them has 1.2 bu set, is that because of more cost effective than 1bu set?

Thank you for advise.

Yo, unless you got mad paper to drop, don't even think about hand-made 2.0 bu.

Hai Hai - useless as ever

Pichit - stitch size is only a general indicator of quality. Some newer (esp. internet selling) manufacturers I think exploit people's limited knowledge to produce impressive sounding bogu but which use poor quality materials and manufacturing techniques. Have a look at
http://windows.gr.jp/kendougu/eindex.html
for some interesting info along these lines.

The most expensive bogu are usually made by craftsmen who have the most years experience. Up close you would be able to see the level of finish differ between one armour and another, i.e. how close and even is the stitching around the leather trim on the top and bottom of the tare.

So in short for the most expensive bogu you are paying for the craftsman who makes your bogu and the materials he is using, not just how closely the bogu is stitched.

I bought 1.2 bu because someone told me that 1.0 bu will take years to break in and too stiff. Even my 1.2 bu was very stiff in the beginning ( especailly men ) and still present some stiffness after 3 month. If I do it over again, I'll buy quality 1.5 bu. I've seen very high end bogu only made of 1.5 bu also some high end havinf same price for 1.2 bu and 1.5 bu ( they don't make 1.0 bu )..

Center is priceless

I am a non-bogu wearing beginner, also.
If you read through some of the bogu topics, you can get some pretty good information, written by the experienced kenshi, about your question.

You see, if I tried to directly answer your question based on the what I've learned, Ben would get all medieval on my a$$ for being a big-mouthed kohai. I wouldn't want that to happen.

If all things equal ( material, craftmanship etc.. ) the answer is YES.

I have heard that 2.0 bu may not even be worth buying. Is this true? If so, then why?

2.0 bu is pretty good, depending on where you buy it. Most hand made bogu you can buy these day's is not made in japan. The bogu that is made in japan is too expensive for most of us to buy. as was said before the quality and experiance of the maker is a big factor in japan. At the moment with japans economy not so good. It's better to buy a set of hand made bogu that's not made in japan as opposed to mechine made.
2.0bu is not as stiff as 1.2/1.5. I recently got a set of 2.0bu very cheap in japan. As far as comfort goes the kote and men are a dream soft and flexable. Almost no breaking in needed. By far better than my 1.5bu kote. for something you want to train in often in Go the 2.bu. When you want to look smart Comps/gradings, go for something better if you can afford it. I see a lot of sensei's useing 2bu as a everyday training bogu. It's so cheap at the moment, go for it.

Thanks alot for the reply. Because of my build (very tall, and pretty lean) I have been told that it would be a good idea to buy handmade bogu that would be custom fit to my measurements. I have been looking at e-bogu's gear for quite some time, and I know that they sell Korean bogu. I will definitly take your advice into consideration when it comes time to buy my bogu. Thanks.

Take a look at www.bogubag.com.
Robert Stroud has some really good prices on bogu from Koei in both machine stitched and hand-made.
