IRVINE, Calif., June 30 (UPI) -- A man waving a samurai-style sword killed two people and injured three others at an Irvine, Calif., supermarket before being shot and killed by police.

Joseph Parker, a 30-year-old grocery bagger at Albertsons, was wearing a green beret and a long, dark coat when he began attacking employees and customers with the three-foot-long sword Sunday.

Officials said two longtime Albertsons' employees, Judith Fleming, 55, and John G. Nutting, 60, were killed. Two customers and another employee suffered moderate to serious wounds.

The Los Angeles Times said Nutting was about two months from retirement. Co-workers said he had worked in the supermarket business since 1960 and had managed several stores in Orange County.

Police declined to speculate on a motive for the attack, but store employees and customers who were acquainted with Parker said he often behaved erratically.

Yeah, I read this on cnn.com.
This is too bad, loss of human lives and injuries.

If I were in the store at the same time as he was, I would be pretty scared to go up against a psycho with a daito because of unpredictable actions and movements.
There's a slight possibility that if you were wearing your kendo uniform, bogu, kabuki theater make-up, and were carrying a daito and shoto, you could psychologically scare him down to surrender.

Best answer to a REAL sword attack is .357 or higher.

happiness is a warm katana.... NOT!

some years ago some kid killed his parents with a katana in spain too.

and not too long ago some asian gangsters had a quarrel armed with katanas also.

i guess every now and then you see this sort of crimes going around. whereas there is a blade and a psycho...

haha only in California would something like this happen, j/k. There was some weirdo in Seattle that wielded a katana in downtown Seattle, but he got hosed down by the cops. I think that happened when I was still a little kid back in middle school.

Supernils,

We have an old rule in the States:

"Never bring a knife to a gun fight."

The clearest expostulation of this rule was in the Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark movie where Harrison Ford as Indy dispatches the sword wielding Eqyptian at a distance.

I remember this too. Makes me kind of wonder what is going through peoples minds.

It would be really interesting to know if any of these katana brandishing folk have been excommunicated from a dojo in the past for some reason.

I'm not sure, but there was a rumor floating around my middle school that that guy was the student of our gym teacher who teaches aikido. It was even on our school's newspaper haha =X.

yeah well I knew Judy Fleming very well, she was (is) my girlfriends mom, and like a 2nd mother to me. All I can say is that the most f**ked up s**t seems to happen to the worlds kindest, coolest, and most loving people. Not to mention she was due to retire in a few months. Not many papers or articles go in to detail much, but being that this is a martial arts forum I assumed you guys might be curious. So feel free to ask any questions,(in respectfull taste of course) I can probably fill u in Anyway thats my 2 cents, I dont think anyone here wants to hear my other $53.94.

Sorry about the lost suffer by you and your girlfriend.

I still can't believe why would anyone be cruel enough to attack/kill someone they know and don't know.

We don't have people attack with katana here. Most of them attack with 'parang'.

I'm sorry you lost your Mom's friend. I saw that article too, when it happened. That was just terrible. Just a note... watch the language you use here, as it could get you banned by the moderators. Just thought I'd give you a heads up... Anyway again, welcome and have fun!
