You have to check it. Also be aware that because of the length of the shinai bag, you sometimes have to pick it up at the oversized luggage window, along with golf bags, etc. It depends on the airline and the airport.

And have an alternate plan for how you may have to replace them because of the gentle and kind baggage moving staff at airports... :)

Usually I've had no problem, but you need to be prepared for problems.

I slid a 4" pvc pipe into my 5 shinai bag and put all my shinai's in that. If they get crushed it will mean they parked a plane on it!

Hehe, I took my sword on the Eurostar as hand luggage - the French customs officer didn't seem to mind... :)

I've taken my shinai on as hand luggage by claiming them to be "bamboo sticks." :) Saying they're shinai in Japan didn't work though. :p

Can you even get shinai past the British security nowadays?

Sports equipment works well too.

Buy a nice carrying case and check it in. You don't want to take a chace and have it confiscated as a viable threat to passengers and Airline personnell.

That is cool indeed. What do you use to cover either end?

He was probably thinking:

..."I am wondereeeing, where ees zees geeant cheese haideeing, zat 'ee must carrie zis incradiable knife for which to cut eet wiz?"
LOL :D

~And yes. It is rarely known but shocking fact that all French people think with an English accent inside their heads.

you might be able to get plastic caps or you could always use duck tape.

If they get crushed it will mean they parked a plane on it!With the PVC pipe inside the shinai bag, no need to do anything with the pipe--just close the bag. Seems like a nice simple and reasonable solution. Baggage could shread the zippers on the bag, but it's not like you can really save things from bad luck with airline baggage.
