Has anyone purchased those Kendo Principle videos from E-bogu. Ín particular I'm looking at the KENDO PRINCIPLES II - BOGU BASICS Video as I'm about to get bogu in a few weeks.

If anyone has purchased these videos can you please add your comments/reviews

I have not purchased the video yet, but plan on getting the whole set on Sat. I'll let you know what I think. :cross_eye

I believe the fourth one is coming soon but not yet available. I have the first two, and the third one is coming with an order I placed not long ago. Bogu set is coming! : )

The first two are quite good, particularly the second one which has a nice little clip of Taro Ariga doing jigeiko with Song Choi, a 4th Dan female from Korea. She's pretty impressive! I think she also does the demonstrations with Taro Ariga on the rest of the tape.

I think the only thing that bothered me a little was the translator that does the english voiceover, telling you what Mr. Ariga is saying. It seems like the sound gets a bit muffled here and there. Something that maybe should have been corrected in the editing. Anyway it's no big deal, I certainly don't feel like I missed any information.

The first one is for raw beginners; how to hold the shinai, rudimentary footwork, basic posture, simple cuts and some etiquette too. The second one is basics and drills; specific cuts, small and big techniques, combinations, more advanced footwork, and kirikaeshi. Watching Taro Ariga do "fast kirikaeshi" is a sight to see. The slow-mo and alternate angles are helpful. I think this is a good videotape set to have.

Wonder why they used a translator? Taro's english is idiomatic.

It struck me as odd too, but I swear I hear someone speaking in Japanese in the background while there is an English language audio track... perhaps it's Taro Ariga doing his own translation? I should check the credits at the end of the tape because I certainly don't know his voice by heart.

maybe it seems more 'authentic' to have someone speak japanese and then have it translated ...?

thats funny...

I dont know if you guys have read Taro<s small article about what is kendo for him, but his writing english is not very good. Maybe even worst than mine! But he speaks fluently, if i remember well.

Yeahh Song Choi is pretty darn good. She was on the Korean women's team for the last WKC? I saw her in a shiai once. She's fast!

I'm planning to get the video myself, but could somebody tell me how the video with the advance techniques are, please =)?

I don't know if there open. I'll try and call them in the morning. I'm taking some friends to the airport, so I'll go after that. :cross_eye

This is off topic, but I was wondering if you Southern Cal kenshi have a preference one way or another between Eguchi or e-bogu?

Really? Could you, Jamie? Because that would be great ^_^!

no big preference,

E-Bogu is close so you can just go down there and get what you need right there ..

Eguchi has Dojo service every week , so if your not in a big hurry you can usually get what you need the following week from Lisa..

Inouye,

Thank you for the reply. I will be in southern California next week, but just for a couple of days. Since I probably will only have time to visit one of them, I was just curious as to which would be better to go to.

your welcome Ryukyu, I think E-Bogu will be your best bet, they have a fully stocked warehouse, Ariga Sensei gave me a tour and they are crammed !!! also if you are into other martial arts you can buy other equipment also ..

Went to E-Bogu and got the first video. They were out of the other two. They will be getting more in, I"ll have to check with them before I go again. Watched first video. VERY basic, kinda short overall good video. Will be good to show kids or very new people. :cross_eye

Forgot one thing. I think a possible reason for Ariga Sensei to be speaking in Japanese is they sell the tapes in more than one language. They had all three videos in stock in Spanish. :cross_eye

Looks like I got the last copy of Part III... Sorry Hongsermeier! It arrived today with the rest of my order, so it must have been shipped right before the Independence Day long weekend (ie: right before you got there). I had practice tonight but when I went home I checked it out.

I'm just starting to learn more advanced waza and this video is really going to help. The nice slow-mo and freeze-frame are great. Shikake Waza, Kaeshi Waza, Debana Waza, Suriage Waza, and Tsubazeriai are covered. The explanations and specific points are good, although some of the names of the waza were odd to me... as if I knew them by other names. As always it's a pleasure to watch a Kendoist like Taro Ariga. What can I say. Speed AND grace is a beautiful thing to see.

Oh, and on this tape the "tea break" is Taro Ariga and Song Choi doing more jigeiko... man, that's fun to watch. I wish there was more of it!

I received the Second video (Bogu Basics) and must say that it is hella short...but overall it will be pretty helpful as I have just started wearing bogu.
