inspired by wout, I decided to put a vid of me online and let some people tell me what Im doing wrong :)

vid was taken a week ago on the belgian 2006 kyu championships, in louvain la neuve. the level is 3th kyu-2nd kyu-1kyu. I lost both matches.

this was the first

That was a great tournament. I had a lot of fun there. Nevertheless, the ground was somehow 'special' and I warn myself in my latest fight.

the orginasation was a bit "off" though.
no way of announcing anything. they moved the 16 poule to the other court, but we never heared an announcement at the original court. so a friend missed his fights, and had to return home without crossing shinais with anyone.

floor was very strange. timepressure forced ipponshobu, ikkyu exams only existed out of one session of keiko, also due to timeshortage.
had fun nonetheless.

Problems also happened last year in Gent. Two friends were told that they should start in the afternoon, and in fact, it was at 11:00AM. So, the organization is humm... 'no yet perfect'.

But like every tournament of that kind, they lack goodwill people to help them.

First kote in the vid looks nice (and sounded nice to!!)
IMHO it needed a little bit more zanshin to get the point awarded to you
Straight cuts look good, not to many dodging (I've seen worse that day!!)
If you keep your distance you will have better chances.

Why am I doing this in English...lol
Zag er goed uit

hehe yeah my sensei told me that to. after that one do, I didnt accelerate after I made the moint, didnt display any zanshin. what was going on in my head: "wow nice! I actually did that? cool!" I surprised myself so much :) better luck next time.

btw, molleke, what club are you with?

Good match, good kiai, great spirit.

i saw first video only...

i liked it, to be 3 kyu its graat... really concentrated on teqnique, both guys... great... besides it wasnt a "violent" kendo, in kyu ppl tend to use too much strenght, i really liked it, congrats :D. nice kamae on both. i didnt get audio so i coldnt hear the kiai :(

anyway, if you ask me i would say that keep it that way coz its great!... but in a tournament isnt just about showing your tecnique, i think that in a tournament could look forward to WIN the match rather than just look great. i think that the taller guy in red (i don know wich one was you) had a little advantage, but as the fight goes on, it seemed that both where loosing the spirit of "winning" and start just fighting, t thing that is becouse it was an even match, and both did great.
it happens to me to, when matches are starting to take time and noone has the ippon, like you start loosing the desire of win and strat thinking "why this is taking so long?"

in short, my humble advice, keep it like that, train hard, but never loose the spitit, remember that in a tournament you are there to win, this means that giving a great fight is not enough.

tnx

anyway, the smaller guy (white) seemed a lil bit nervous, you see? the upper part of the body bent forward and the hands too far away of the body in kamae it seems like he wanted to keep distance from the taller guy, when yoy separate too much your hands from the hara is more like a "dont hit me" stand rather than a "you want a piece of me boy??" standing...
sometimes i see ppl bent forward like that to do debana men or stuff like that, but he didnt.

in the other hand taller guy seems stronger and relaxed... but sometimes too relaxed

in the first vid, the white is a girl, and she did seem nerveous. the second fight I was at the end of my breath, so I could come off a bit too relaxed :)

overall, good. footwork needs to be more sharp, crisp. at this point (nikkyu), it's usual to telepath where you are going to hit, but it is also a good time to start thinking about how "not to" do it. good luck,

just another vital point that would do you(and your pocket) good to correct on, you always hit the mengane of your opponent. let yoru cuts come from the top, good luck,

Next time, make sure that the camera man doesn't spin it around like that.
