In the referee seminar on the first day, all referees are instructed that Japan will always come in first for all events or else they will suffer consequences by the Yakuza.

Erhm, what about the Korean referees?
BTW the Korean team manager looks/acts more like a Yakuza than anyone else. Didn't witness this but I was told by many that after the finals he broke his flag and attempt to smack Miyazaki (with a shinai).
(I don't remember. Was that the coach or manager?)

ERRRM....she's not kidding about this one....I got it on film since I was sitting directly behind him during the match...
it was after Eiga scored the tsuki. the guy broke down in tears...then grabbed the manager's flag snapped it, threw it down, then picked it up and threw it at the japanese side. He then tried to grab a shinai from a bag but was restrained by some of the team.

Yes, the words "conspiracy theory" are in the heading of this topic.

I think it was more the frustration. I mean there were some pretty dodgy calls in Japan's favour. Big example was the Italy vs. Japan match in the individuals.
Korea were real close this time. The whole team broke down when they lost, it was a very emotional moment. They really came within an ant's breath of winning.

Speaking of theory's. What's up with the tsuki's? In the womans, Kaori Kikunaga scored one. I practiced with her off an on for over 1 year and NEVER saw her even try one. Then Eiga wins the mens team match with one. Were there more? In 2 1/2 years I've seen one scored for a point in Cal taikai's. :cross_eye

If it's any consolation we rarely see any tsuki get scored here.
However, I seem to remember some So. Cal. sensei defending the idea that tsuki should not be taught before 4th or 5th dan on these very boards. If that is the generalised case in your area (that tsuki is taught so late and that senseis are hostile towards the technique itself) then look no further as to why it is never scored.

I've never been told you should wait that late to learn tsuki. We actually start practicing it as soon as you start wearing bogu. You just can't use it in taikai till shodan. :cross_eye

I don't think I saw you at the bar, but some of the nights in the bar are a bit sketchy :D
The pictures could be from when the Korean Team Managers protested, don't quote me on that though as I could be wrong.

One theory I've heard is that they tend to expect the Japanese to score, and thus are more likely to raise flags for them. It's a problem when you're judging, because part of judging a high level match is anticipating the action. If you're not expecting a point, you can miss it. And there's a real tendency to be looking for the point from the person who you've decided is stronger.

Well the refs really sucked sometimes ... especially in the match where there was an Italian and Japanese guys in the induviduals. Italian had many nice ippons, but only one ref was rising his flag. Japanese finaly pushed him out of shiai-jo , it was a clear oshi-dashi, but the refs gave hansoku to Italian, making Japanese a winner of this match. All audience went "Booooooooo", even the Japanese. It looked like no one can make an ippon on Japanese, no matter hard they try and how good they hits are, refrees just speep It was obvious, that Italian was much better, he didn't get FS Award either.:(

Well, while I sympathize with the Koreans agony (they came really close this time and their training was such that it was like getting 2nd place is trash) they really let loose with their emotions. Isn't this considered bu-rei in most kendo venues? Especially the part where the korean coach showed anger and contempt by snapping flags and trying to grab a shinai. Crying is one thing. Showing rage towards your opponent is another. I think that this is very irresponsible on the part of the coach. He is supposed to be the leader of the Korean team for Gods sake.
I remember another fit of protest at the Salt Lake Olympics at Short Track speed skating where this Korean athlete was disqualified. Korean newspapers were all over it calling it some sort of conspiracy and I heard death threats were made to the Gold Medalist (who happened to be Japanese-American) Apollo Ohno.

well....that match was controversial.....propers cuts were made...but the refrees did not give a point....and the " tats not a solid tsuki point" feeling for this match was caused by the judges. They were hesitant in giving the point and suddenly gave it...so thats why the korean manager was so pissed off..well....tats wat i think... :tired:
