View Full Version : Wierd Allergies

Ive known for years that Im allergic to metals - mainly nickel and perhaps lead. Lots of people have the same thing, particularly with earrings.

Unfortunately I react enough to have problems with ANY metallic thing other than gold or silver on my skin - zips, buttons, shoe buckles, the arms of sunglasses, rivets in jean pockets, not to mention jewellery. Ive worn dangly earrings where the only non-silver metal was little bits on the ends - I got rashes from when they would swing and brush the side of my neck :disapp:. Bah, thank goodness gi and hakama have no zips.

I was just working out bush for a week and had to wear work pants with a metal press-buttons and rivets in the pockets. So I covered the skin where these would touch with bandaids. Great. No problem with metal! I just got back to Perth this morning and took off the last of the bandaids.

Guess what? Im allergic to bandaids.

Every patch that was covered now has a lovely rash in the pattern of the adhesive, so Im guessing thats the problem. Even though I put fresh ones on everyday, wearing them that long did the trick.

Does anyone else have wierd allergies?

hahahaha, you made me laugh about the dodgy fiance bit. let's see, i am alergic to overly sarcastic people (because let's face it, sarcasm isn't humor), overly cocky kendo players, teacher's pet. ...etc. <<wow, weird alergies indeed. hahaha, well, all jokes a side. I am alergic to animal furs, and spider webs, and cold weather. ..yeah, like when i get cold, i start to sneeze.

As a geologist, I'm wondering how do you personally reconcile the knowledge that Diamonds are not rare in nature, which is usually associated with value, and that a Cubic Zirconium is in fact a real (man made) diamond?

I think secretly all women know this.
They just want to make us suffaaaa!

OOps..
Scratch that last one.
It appears that Cubic Z is NOT a diamond after all.

Oh......Crap.....

And I've been telling my wife that it is all these years......
LOL

*Edit...Dear gods!
There's no way she could have not known that.....
Why, she's been humoring me all this time!

I'm allergic to cats. No seriously, really badly allergic. Like I hear about these people who have to bath their cats so that they can live in the house with them without the owners having a reaction, I haven't even BEEN NEAR a cat since I was nine. Last time I stroked a cat I was about 11 and I ended up in intensive care.

I am so allergic that if I am on the bus and the person sat next to me has a cat, I have a reaction. Its terrible!! My boss has a cat and one day he put his coat over my chair. I didnt go to work for a few days after!! I carry steriods with me everywhere I go (well i'm suppose to!) and I take daily medication. It totally sucks.

I'm also allergic to feathers, dust mites (thats normal though) chlorine, bleach... all that kind of stuff. Not good, not good.

Allergic to metals? Thats something i;ve never heard of...

So can you not take iron tablets?

They've just bred anallergenic cats....

I seem to be allergic to hard work. Can't get away with it but still bitch all the time...

Funny thing was that I thought I was allergic to my men 8(. Turns out I just needed to use one of those chin cloths. Would have been a great excuse, though...

Alison: a guy at my dojo is allergic to band-aids, but apparently the allergenic substance is not found in all types of band-aids. Maybe it's the same for you?

There's a guy at our dojo who replaced his kote a year or so back. Well, something in the laces gave him a horrible horrible rash, so he switched back to his old kote, but he still kept getting the rash. He wraps his wrists like a fiend with cloth and plastic and such, but it still gets on his skin somehow. I feel so bad for him !!

As for me? I can't eat uncooked plants (fruits and veggies) - the inside of my lips, inside of my mouth, tongue, throat, even down in my esopohagus gets all swollen and I have trouble breathing. Needless to say, it makes my life VERY difficult, and I have taken mega vitamin supplements since I was very young. Oh, and I'm allergic to penicillin. My mom took me to a doctor who gave me "allergy shots" (to make me build up a tolerance or something) for years, but I think it only made the problem worse.

Taking iron and stuff is fine, as far as I can tell its just my skin that reacts. Man, it sucks that you are so allergic to cats. I love cats.

Sounds like a few people have strange allergies - like spiderwebs?!?! and fresh veges?!?!?! wow

Are you, or have you just sweated and drawn the metal to your skin?
Maybe you need to do a test and try the bandage with out any metals near by.

I am not allergic to most things.
Coral scratches go septic on most people, I do not even clean them and ... nothing.
Poison Ivy, nothing, I have pulled the stuff out with bare hands and the person showing me where it was got a rash from proximity.
Poison sumac, nothing.

When hiking in Nepal, one of my fellow hikers wished that just once I would get the sh1ts like they did with astonishing frequency, and .. nothing.

Did get a reaction to a brown recluse spider bite, but that was venom, not allergy.

Cat scratches - no infection.

Gotta love my immune system, keep feeding it alcohol.

I think i'd walk off a bridge if I couldn't have coffee.

Alison, did you put the bandaids on straight after you had a shower? Else some metal dust or something might have gotten trapped under the bandaids. Considering where you were, I wouldn't be surprised.

Had a chance to use the new tenegoui yet? I promise there's no metal in it ;)

Im allergic to the sun, when I look at it, I sneeze. But this is actually a good thing, because whenever I get the urge all I gotta do is take a glance at the Sun or at one of the lights in my house, and Im fixed. I have read that 25% of people have this problem(so its not that rare, and I dont realy thing its a true allergy), but I am a sun-sneezer.

I am allergic to citrus. I can't have any lemons, limes, oranges, or any of that crap... not even a drop of the juice. And I live in Florida!!! The only think I realy miss is lemonade though... I never was an Orange fan. It is a pain though because so many drinks and salad dressings and stuff have citrus ingredients. Alas I will never experience a margarita... sigh.

ohh sorry for the double post but I just remembered a realy weird one. One of my friends started having siezures when we were in high school and they thought she was epileptic. They tried everything but she wasnt responding to any of the treatments. Long story short they figured out that she had this bizzare allergy to preservatives and dyes in foods! They built up in her system and caused her to have horrible siezures, so now she has to be realy careful with what she eats. It is kinda scary all the chemicals we eat, but I just wont think about it so I can enjoy my twinkies and hotdogs and all that gross stuff.

a friend of mine is an electrician who works on the national grid power lines. He had a really bad accident and suffered burns over most of his body... while lying with his skin smoking away in the hospital, the nurse asked him if he was allergic to anything....he comes back with "yeah....electricity". The nurse cracked up.... (And this is not a joke, he really is like this...)

I am only allergic to vast quantities of beer, which can make me sick if I dont have a chinese meal first.

They had something similar or the same on a recent episode (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finding_Judas) of the TV series "House", but it was most likely a more acute case. The condition was called "Erythropoietic protoporphyria".

I put them on first thing in the morning so there shouldnt have been anything under them. Ive tried the nailpolish before but it wears off very quickly so its a pain to keep putting it on everything.

Listening to everyone elses stories makes me very glad that I can eat anything and do pretty much anything I want, my allergies may be annoying, but thats all they are thankfully. Im interested to see what happens if I get to do some underground drilling in a copper/nickel mine next year - lots of dust...

Im still reeling from the idea of someone not being able to drink coffee... *shudder* If we ever get that Newbie, Ill hold your hand and we'll walk off the bridge together!:silly:

Ive got my first training back tonight and Im dying to try the new tenegui you gave me! (FYI: it has little frogs all over it! SOOOO cute!!)

Well, some of you I see got shocked when I said I couldn't drink coffee, but when you get used to it you just don't miss it, besides I discover this when I was still young (about 10 years ago or so) so I wasn't adict enough to get insane because of the fact I was allergic and for me was easy to just quit. It was either keep drinking coffee or get my face and my stomach to the worst of pain ever. I rather choose have my face clean and my stomach painless.
