The comics were awesome, but those movies are pretty weak.
Among the many problems, I would have to say the worst is that the actor looks nothing like the guy from the comics. The movie version has a short, fat guy, and your supposed to believe he's the greatest swordsman in Japan. However, the child actor for Cub was an excellent match.
I'd say go with Kurosawa. Or the Zatoichi series. BTW, there's a brand new Zatoichi movie coming out, first since the 1960's, it's being by Takeshi Kitano.

All of the Akira Kurosawa movies are playing with brand new 35mm prints at Pacific Cinematheque in Vancouver if anyone is interested in seeing any of those mentioned above.
They're playing from now until September 2nd I think.

Does anyone no the name of those movies with the blind swordsman? I saw the 30 minutes of one late at night when I lived in Japan. I know there is a series of them but I can't remember the name.

xvikingx: I think it's most probably one of the 'Zatoichi' series of films you saw.

Zatoichi, the fastest draw in the East
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Fans of Takeshi Kitano may already know that he has remade
Zatoichi, the classic period action movie, which is slated to
hit screens September, 2003. Zatoichi, the blind masseur and
gambler is also a highly skilled swordsman who can take out
a dozen men before they know what hit them with the lightning
fast draw of his cane sword and his keen sense of hearing.
In an issue of Marvel Comics' Daredevil, blind lawyer Matt
Murdock (alter ego of Daredevil) visited Japan sometime in
the '80s. When he beat the snot out of his would-be-muggers
there, the thugs scurried away from him in fear screaming
"Zatoichi!"
The character of Zatoichi was first made famous by the late
Shintaro Katsu, who reprised the popular role no less than
25 times in the series.
The Zatoichi boxed sets contain 6 of the very popular Zatoichi
movies each, all anamorphically remastered with a new
telecine from the original negative, with a bonus disc each
containing a Zatoichi documentary.

Zatoichi releases, please visit the following pages at

If you want to find the Samurai flick that suits you, I suggest you get the new book Silver Screen Samurai by Tokyo-based cocoro books (it's in English, $19.95). Living in Tokyo, I've had a chance to see some advance copies, and it looks excellent. It goes back to 1935 right through to Best Takeshi's Zatoichi (2003). Full-color, and stacked full of artwork, it also covers women samurai, anime, screen legends, and of course the inimitable Katsu Shin. It'll be out in the States in Jan/Feb.[B][I][COLOR=DarkSlateBlue]

Seven Samurai is a sure bet.... very gritty and unromantic as far as the battle scenes are concerned.
Btw, has anyone heard any rumours about Criterion releasing a new version of the film?

I think your forgeting the ultimate epic , Kagemusha! Not much sword wielding if any, but gets right into the culture, the period, the Daimyo and the politics. Plus a great script and cast and amazing sets. Really captures the spirit of Sengoku Jidai Japan...

Anything Akira Kurosawa Directed particularly :
Ran ( his version of King Lear)
Kagemusha ( a great take on the Takeda clan history)
The Seven Samurai ( they made "the magnificent seven" from it)
Yojimbo ( cant remember which became "a fistfull of dollars.....)
Sanjuro ( or maybe this one....??)
The Hidden Fortress ( Star Wars was supposedly based on this)
I also love that series of black and white episodes of "the samurai" with Shintaro the hero. Loved them as a kid!
