Anybody know what it is for? Only for storing a blade, or can you practice iaido with e.g. a shirasaya iaito (I saw one in a catalogue).

I must admit I have only seen them used by collectors for storing the blade. When I have seen them they usually have a kanji description of the blade and the forge where they originated from.

Shirasaya are storage cases for blades, effectively. They are not meant for regular use. Replica makers have sold a bunch of these "shirasaya" swords because the name sounds cool and they're cheaper than swords with proper fittings. The only time you would want a shirasaya is for long-term storage of a valuable blade.
