I share your sentiment, but since this is posted in the lounge area. i can't totally over look the entertainment value.
you know how in the cafeteria in high school there are always those kids that likes to be extra loud and want to draw attention to themselves? usually don't do that well in school, and kidna on the less attractive side? well, when those kids do grow up (physically). .. but mentally they'll always be the same kid.

Khaw gave a link to a piece of historic cinematography (that's such a cool word, but I apologise if it's the wrong one). If he was making it up today, it would be distasteful, but it's part of a wider movement of blaxploitation cinema.
I thought it was pretty funny...

1) You made an assumption: I did not judge Meng; he stated he meant no ill intentions.
2) I did not say faultless. I said Advanced thinking people -- Another faulty assumption. An Advanced thinking pearson can & will make mistakes; however, they learn from unwise decisions.
3) I gave a reason why "I" did not like it. The fact of the matter is I didn't have to give a reason why i didn't like it. I did as an explanation. That was another assumption you made.

While I could not assume to know what it was like in growing up in your shoes, I can certainly say that I've grown up with my fair share of ignorance and racism. Being the only chinese kid in a school of 500 tends to make you a focal point for every arsehole seeking attention.

What i meant was that it's easy for people to type & post anything when they don't have to worry about the feelings of others. When i post, I post as if i were speaking to someone in person. I try to consider what i post, and if it will be offensive or inconsiderate. I try to speak & type ethically. If someone indicates that i may have offended them, i will stop to listen no matter if it's internet forum or in person.
You attacked my opinion with an incorrect assessment; I didn't claim to speak for anyone but myself...and I didn't attack your friend.
Perhaps, instead of watching un-creative editing of an old exploitation movie, you should pick up a book.

Hmmm....well, I can see where anyone can take offence, or feel this post was in ill-taste. Throwing the N word around(eventhough I am not saying anyone was), is a very sensitive thing. And neither can you dismiss it so insensitively, just because it might not offend some people. It doesn't matter if the video is a part of history or not, but just the use of word. People have put their whole lives into disecting "The adventures of Huckleberry finn" to find out whether or not it was a "racist" book because of the use of this word in it.
The N word is extremely taboo, when you hear it, it just calls your attention and makes some people feel extremely uncomfortable, and when someone names a thread "Boss Nigga", its bound to get some critism. Although I did feel our friend could have expressed his discomfort better, rather than insinuate that the people on this board were stupid. :(
For all those non-americans, dont ever use this word in the States, it can be very dangerous. Just the other day, a cacausion kid said the word while playing basketball, and had a whole bunch of angry black guys about to beat his ass, untill they found out, he was mentally impaired.
BTW, I am not taking sides, and I did thing the video was quite interesting. :ko:

Well, I was contemplating using another name but I felt "what's the point?" That's what the movie is called so what else could you call it. I'll admit I contemplated putting the actual title with "er" instead of "a" but thought that would be too shocking...ah well. As I said, you can't take this flick seriously, its so over the top that its comic genius.
While I think people have the right to their opinion, I think taking this film is offensive is like me calling Kung Pow racist.

I started training in Kendo because I heard it was full of advanced thinking people.
Sorry to disappoint you, but we’re just like the rest. We just have a strange hobby/love/interest, JSA. The people training JSA come from all walks of life. This means we aren’t all scholars. I like to think I’m open minded, however, once in a while I find out I’m not as open minded as I thought.
I grew up in the late 60's absorbing the pain caused by racism & ignorance.I found your link distastefull.
Now, I can never understand how you feel, I’m a white guy from Holland, but you have to put the film into perspective here. I really don’t like the N word, it’s insulting, no doubt about it. The film is a classical example of blaxploitation. Is it wrong, yes, but when you look at it you see a black guy kicking some racist ass give them a taste of there own medicine.
Again the use of the N word is disgusting, but when you look at the time the movie was made and the era the movie portrays, the use of the N word was more common. We don’t use it (I don’t), but we’re are trying to put the movie into the perspective of that era. Because of your background, this is very hard and I do understand (a little) that you don’t like it and why, but please try to understand that not all of us have the experiences with racism like you and therefore have a different view on this movie. So please bring your message with more tact and explanation, this way you don’t get flamed.

Sorry for the double post:
The title of the movie is in fact Boss nigger check the link (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072725/), no editing whatsoever. For somebody who lived in that era and nowadays, you seem to neglect the fact that black americans use the n word casually between eachother which is the case in that movie.

I have to say thanks for responding in a respectfull manner & posting your disagreement with out attacking me.
The title of the movie is in fact Boss nigger check the link, no editing whatsoever. No. That link is editing of that movie; it is not the entire movie, And the movie had multiple titles. you or many people may like it. .I didn't.
For somebody who lived in that era and nowadays, you seem to neglect the fact that black americans use the n word casually between eachother which is the case in that movie.
I am an American of african descent. I don't use that word. My family & friends don't use that word. The Majority of Americans(no matter the race) don't use that word.
This is the problem that i have with exploitation fiction. they are lies and they support stero-typing no matter the race. Because you may have heard of some rap songs or seen some gangster movies where the N-word is being tossed around doesn't mean that this is actually going on in the black community. My family never supported exploitation movies in any manner...so we didnt watch them. I have been to many all-black niteclubs and particpated in sports such as boxing which have a heavy black percentage and i can tell you we don't use that word with each other; we call each other by our names like every other normal American. i work in healthcare and have met many black professionals: none of them use it. In fact, I haven't met any Americans that use it in 90's or 2000's. Only visitors from other coutries that still play those outdated movies, and even they don't understand what it means.
I can't speak for gang-members because i don't know any. Of the 12% population they are 1 percent.
Many Americans aren't happy with what happened in the past. We learned from it & advanced. You don't have to be black to find that clip uncomfortable & you don't have to be white to find it funny. I as an individual didn't like it.
Sorry if i came off too strong, but i had to speak my feelings.

I guess it should be my turn to chime in.
I am a black American, but I wasn't born during the 60s so I really don't know what it was like during those times beyond the general school education, various Eyes on the Prize videos, a few books and a class I took in College (very interesting one though).
As far as people's use of the N word, it mostly depends on what side of the fence you were on. If you haven't lived during that time then, understandably, you would hate the use of the word. From there, it's various degrees of hatred towards the word based on your style of living.
Bokushingu definately has a point though. For those of you who might not have been exposed to the meaning of the word and such, then I would be careful when using such a word. There are understanding people that might let it slide depending on how well you know the person but, in most cases, you could end up hurting the person, even if you don't mean it.
As for the general usage of the word in today's world, from a younger person's point of view, the word is used more than you think. It is used a lot in pop music videos and amongst the "hip" black people. But in a more professional setting similar to the situations Bokushingu described, it definately isn't used.
I was raised learning to not put everything in one group. When it comes to the N word, I put it in perspective as far as who uses it and take it on a case by case basis depending on the other person's intent. Of course, I use that thinking in everything I do. But when it comes to actually saying the word, you will never hear me use it in any situation. The word has been used in negative context and it still hurts people to no end who have suffered under the use and feelings behind the word.
Despite the thread meaning no harm whatsoever, it would have been better off to not post it at all. Being such a worldwide forum, its easy to take offense to just about anything that might have some sort of negative connotation. I wouldn't go so far as to go totally PC (Politically Correct), but it's nice to think about what one is saying before he or she says it.
On a side note, there was this one time where this black guy told me that I wasn't black, but negro, because I couldn't think for myself. I'll spare the details, but he is definately someone that needs help.

My opinion is if you can simply say a word and it causes you to get emotional, upset, or flat out pissed off then the word controls you. You become manipulated. I've been called racial slurs several times but to allow those words to have such power over me would make me a weak-minded person.
A good friend of mine always said meet ignorance with silence.
Political correctness is a disease which robs people of their common sense and turns you into a tight ass. Leave political correctness to the crooked politicians. Again, my own opinion.

You coming to visit us or you spurning us? If you go to Ramon's whilst you're over there, make sure you order a macchiatto from Russell.
Back to the topic though, whilst I laughed at the clip and found it amusing (being a huge western fan) I also found it interesting from a historical point of view. Just think - something like that used to actually be acceptable. If we just forget about the era (and seeing things like this remind us of it more poingantly that reading it in a text book) then we forget about those who fought so damn hard against it or had to live through it.

Thoughtful posts, Bokushingu! At first I thought you were being too stiff but thanks for letting us understand your perspective more. Hey, man, if you grew up in that era, you must know that there are a lot of black people who love those movies. That was sort of the double-edged sword about them: they were made usually by white people, and perpetuated stereotypes (I'll give some examples below). At the same time, though, they were the first popular movies with black protaganists; they were seen by many as empowering. This is going to sound cliche as hell but I, a white guy, have several black friends that LOVE those movies, including older black men who, at the time, really loved and identified with Shaft, Cleopatra Jones, Jim Kelly and Fred Williamson and the like. I've also written for Badazz Mofo (http://badazzmofo.com) magazine, a cult zine dedicated to films of that era, including blaxploitation but also action movies, kung fu movies, horror movies and the like. (The publisher calls himself HNIC - Head Nigga in Charge. Obviously, I would never call him that, myself, nor is it license to be insulted, but that's how he refers to himself.)
And, hey, I mean no disrespect when I say this, but NONE of your friends use the n-word and NONE of them like hip-hop and blaxploitation-type media? I'm from the Detroit area, a very mixed area, and I can tell you the kinds of dudes I grew up with usually do like that kind of thing.
About those examples. I think the reason they were called blaxpolitation is that they exploited the target audience, drawing on the audience's desires in storytelling to sell them a repackaged, cliche-ridden, stereotype-enforcing format. Take Shaft, considered the first film icon of this era (next to Sweet Sweetback's Badasssss Song). Shaft was based on a series of novels written by a white guy. His very name is a penis reference. The character is sexually insatiable and loves to fight. When he needs back-up, he can always call on street-gang types. Stereotype to the max, right? Indeed it is. But, like I said, at the same time, black audiences got to see Richard Roundtree up on the screen for the first time instead of John Wayne or Steve McQueen. And he wasn't trying to bed white women or get favor in a white world, he bowed to no one. Ditto the female version, Cleopatra Jones. And Jim Kelly, the Afro-sporting badass from Enter the Dragon? The very blueprint for black dudes and martial arts for decades!
So, anywho, that's my take on it. I blaxploitation is something to be appreciated and if you can keep your perspective on it, that's what really makes it enjoyable. Also, different people from different countries will have to see these movies from OUTSIDE the American experience. I'm a yank myself, and I grew up in this era (born in the 70s, so a little late to the party). That's gonna give me a different perspective than a Chinese guy from Malaysia.
Incidentally, the third Shaft film, Shaft in Africa, combines the Shaft mythos with a kung fu sensibility that's hard to top.
Also, LOL @ "They call him boss, they call him boss, boss kurukuru...he so bad." Kurukuru, as a Japanese man, don't you know that you're only supposed to talk in the clipped sentences of a mystical martial arts master?! :D
