Any chance there is a kendo dojo near Susanville, California? This town is way out in the boonies. Reno, Nevada is the closest big city and that’s 1.5 hours away in good weather. I don’t see any dojos listed in Reno anyway.

Even if your dojo is a few hours away, please let me know. Especially if you have weekend keikos. My nephew is moving up there next month and he would love to continue with kendo if possible but it’s looking like he might have to wait for college or get into a high school exchange program with Japan.

Thanks!

PS Sacramento is a bit over 3 hours away.

Doubt Redding would do. First, Highway 89 in the winter is often impassable. You would have to detour to Reno, over the Sierra to Sacto and then up to Redding if there is a storm. My daughter lives in Redding so I will call her and have her check.

Poor kid is just SOL. Well, maybe he'll get in the occasional keiko when he visits his sister in the Sacramento area. Better than nothing.

Thank You!

Sacramento is a bit of a drive from Susanville. There are two kendo dojos in Sacramento, both part of NCKF: Sacramento Kendo Dojo and Rancho Cordova Kendo Dojo. I believe Sacramento practices on Tuesdays and Fridays. RC practices on Mondays and Thursdays. Speaking on behalf of RC, we welcome visitors any time. We occasionally (maybe once a month) have a Saturday practice, but it's usually specifically in preparation for a tournament or promotions.

Good luck,

Hope to see you around.

My daughter checked with my grandson's karate sensei. He just laughed. There is western fencing in Redding though. I went there about 7 years ago, scooped up the city championship and took it back to Idaho. They were a little upset at the time.

At least they have Karate in Redding!

We haven't found any martial arts in Susanville, yet...surely they will find something once Mickey has moved and meets other kids. Considering to 2 major employers are the Army and a prison there must be some sort of self defense classes available even if no kendo.

Congrats on stealing the Redding’s fencing cup! Sounds like they didn’t exactly invite you back to defend your title.

A big “Thank you” to all of you for your help and suggestions.

Hongsermeier,

Unfortunately, Travis Schelle (sp?) quit last year (shortly after I started). I understand he had some personal commitments or issues that he needed to address. It's too bad, I only got a chance to talk to him a few times. He seemed like an interesting fellow (and I liked the way he called out the cadence during jumping suburi).
