I think those guys belong to the Nokia company's kendo team... of course they will have the name Nokia on their bogu... It's not differernt from having your club name on your bogu..

there are already many people who consider it a sport without the help of sponsor logos on bogu. thanks for the pic though, i also have never seen that.

Or having your club name on you keikogi. I fuly agree with you. I dont see the big deal, as long as it isn't too much and too flashy/colorful.

From what I remember, all of the Korean team had the Nokia logo on their Dou...
I don't see the problem with it at all actually. In fact I would LOVE to see more of it!!!
(Any potential sponsors reading this feel free to contact me :) )
I wonder how many of us would actually turn down a considerably decent amount of $$$ to wear a subtle (as these are) logo on your dou whilst appearing in the WORLD KENDO CHAMPIONSHIPS, if it was offered to them...
I know I wouldn't
But then my bougu could hardly be said to be 'blank' either
In my opinion, Kendo is as much of a sport as it is a budo anyway, but thats a new kettle of fish.

"TEAM--NOKIA TMC"
one of the pro(?) kendo or kumdo team in korea.
those with Nokia Logo belongs to Team Nokia, also the president of NOKIA TMC is the current president of Korean Kumdo Association.
Hes so dedicated to Kumdo that, he made a kumdo team within his company.

Not only that, he (Kim Jong Rim?) donates a considerable amount of his own money to the KKA each year - considerable as in a couple million dollars (not won) each year. If you had to name one single person most responsible for the Koreans winning WKC this year, it would be him. He was at the Bong Rim Ki tournament this past summer (that's his title, so the tournament is named after him, as it was named after the previous president). When you meet him, you'd never guess that he is a company executive and a KKA president - he just looks & acts like a nice little grandpa, but he's a kick-a** kendoka. He appears in some of the instructional videos that KKA puts out.
I wouldn't worry about having team logo on the bogu, yet. If bogu's start looking like NASCAR cars, then I'd worry.

at last i think is not too bad to have an sponsor, because some times (like happens to me and i think a lot of persons) the federation doesn`t have too much money to pay all the people, so i need to pay by myself to ``represent my country`` hahaha.
pd: at last some sponsor just give you the jaquet... o.o

I think you're talking about Rhee Jong Nim who is the vice-chairman of the KKA. He's a professional kumdoin (3rd place at WKC 3 or so) and was in responsible for the creation of the federal training center. He's on the Olympic Committee in Korea, btw, and is a FIK Director.
The guys who have the logo work for Nokia and compete for the company team. Kim Gi Sun is the current President of the KKA and CEO of Nokia Korea. The MAN for financial backing in the KKA was Lee Jae Wook, also known as Bong Rim Ki, who was KKA President and Nokia President before he retired for health reasons. He's the guy with the bucks...
We have a sponsor at our dojo as well. We use the money for all kinds of things including sending people from our dojo to Korea and the WKC to represent Italy.

Sorry - got the names mixed up.
Also - I think the term sponsor is misleading - it's not like Nike who just give money to have their logo on the player - they actually own & operate a team, so it's more than a mere sponsor.

not at all! sponsor give money and wants resluts so they take a lot of decision for the team...
it s nice to have sponsor who provide you some equipment or pay for your transport but they ask something in return. more they pay more they ask...

anyway...
my humble opinion is that first of all kendo cant "turn" in to a sport becouse it is already kind of a sport (martial art-sport neverending discussion).
and i dont think that a sponsor can me bad for kendo, becouse no matter how much money a sponsor gives or ask something in return, it would NEVER change kendo for the way IT IS, i mean, to be good, to win tournament and stuff like that you HAVE to practice hard and do KENDO or else you wont be good enough to win tournaments. in fact i think thar sponsoring could be benefical becouse a professional kenshi would have another reason to train hard and improve his kendo, wich is benefical to us all.
i really think that if a guy is one of the best kenshi on the world isnt bad if he gains money out of it. i think that is well deserved if you really train hard as any sportsman would do. i dont think that kendo means being poor.
i think it will be wrong if the OBJECTIVE of the kenshi is winning money, instead of improve his spirit trough kendo. but teaching that is responsability of each sensei.

What an irrelevant and shallow-minded statement
I think too many people 'mystify' Kendo as some sort of ritualistic and magical 'way of the samurai' - thing is, samurais are cool, yes, but they did not do Kendo
Not that i am denouncing the philisophical outcomes of Kendo, not at all, however, I think those philosophies are relevant to any sport, not just 'budo'
Sponsorship would only help kendo, globaly, as would more television/media coverage and, in what is of couse my individual opinion, its inclusion into the Olympic games

well, I agree that more coverage and sponsorships would help kendo all over the world, not just thinking about the us, japan or korea... but in other counties the resources that kendo has are very limited and sponsorships would be really benefical.. however, that doenīt mean inclusion in the olimpics IMO.

Sponsors means that they want exposure and as the amount of money invested increases, so does the amount of pressure to produce results...and kendo would turn into a pure sport. If sponsorship should be allowed, they need to highly regulate it as they do (did?) in fencing.

well I donīt know much about sponsorships restrictions.. though Iīve never heard of a rule in kendo saying something about it, however despite Iīd like to see a Red Bull-Like Do or I Donīt, Diffussion And Money for tournaments and Seminars is always Wellcome. Moreover which I think that Sponsors seek is exposure, more than results, rsults a for the dojo or whatever, they count money not prizes, and yet, if theyīd ask for results itīd be up to the orientation that your sensei, or you, or your dojo or whoever gives to the Kendo you pactice, and Still you could benefit from sponsorship.

As long as Kendo continues to have poor media coverage, there'll be no interest from advertisers and sponsors because - what would be the point?

I don't think having a sponsor name on your bogu is that bad. I would never do it though.(not that I have a sponsor)
