Here's a photo of the Canadian women's team captain published in (I think) a Glasgow paper:

Wendy's gotten hitched? Cool!

Now that's a fine example of a kendo badass who can rightfully wear a fancy dou (see Neil's pic). I remember being mesmerized by it when I had keiko with her during last year's gasshuku in Montreal. It looked like ornate cherry bark. Way cool. Good luck trying to try out your best dou strike on her, though!

Photographing kendo strikes is a tricky business but certainly rewarding when it turns out well! I managed to get one during a shiai where one of the guys was completely off the ground. He was attempting men on a much larger opponent and eventually went on to win the Fighting Spirit award.

Here's mine. I just received the photos today and I scanned a few of the better ones up.

Those of you in the UK I'll show you the originals. They are so much better.

p.s. I took them without any flash. ISO 800 is excellent.

"i dont no much about photography but the photo looked interesting"

Just in case anyone is interested in how this picture was taken

I used Iso 100 (believe it or not) slide film, with no flash, but with a tripod, a shutter speed of 1/2 a second, and an aperture of F4

i know thats a lot of technical jargon but if anyone does have an interest in photography (as it appears some do) they will understand.

A

What was the opening of your lens?...if you remember, and cared.

The depth of field isn't as shallow as I'd expected, so the lenses are not wide open. Given the reasonably sharp pictures, I presume that the lights are strong in the hall?

I was doing some preliminary tests with my new camera and snapped a few of these off. Nothing spectacular just some pics.

Although you are probably right, this is not neccesarily a strct rule of thumb. Aperture is not the only variable which affects Depth of Field, but also the distance the lens is from the subject, and the focal length of the lens itself.

I would probably guess that, using the available lighting that i saw at the WKC on iso800 speed film, the apperture was probably around f4 - f8 (depends on the lens, guessing 50 - 100mm??).

My advice to anyone taking shots of kendo would be to go for the widest aperture available, thus allowing a faster shutter speed. Also try different things, i have had great results from shutter speeds as low as 1/30!

the most important thing about Kendo photography is to have fun and enjoy it!

Sorry for the slow response...

Those WKC pics at my site were shot with a standard 50mm (uh, Olympus OM10), aperture f2.8-4 (widest). Didn't use tripod but I tried to lean against the wall for some support.

Tried ISO 3200 B&W recently - some are nice but most are too dotty... should have just pushed slower films...

Wow, thanks for the info! I had no idea that this competition existed.

Can I ask is there a limit to how many prints you can enter?
