Hello everyone,

How many people are going to the Nisei Week Tournament? I have heard it is kind of big. I have not heard many details about this one except that I have signed up for it and that it will be on the 10th of August.

Will it be set up the same way as the June SCKF tournament (Adult Kyu, Child Kyu, Senior Kyu, Yudansha) or will it be different?

Thanks
Brendon

It will be slightly different from previous tournaments.

It will broken up over two days. The first on Aug. 10th in Little Tokyo at Nishi Hongwanji (Kyu, Women Dan, Adult Kyu) the second at CSU Long Beach (Yudansha) on Aug. 17th.

Good luck at the tournament :)

I hope to be competing on the 10th and schedule permitting, the 17th as well.

We practiced the kihon shai format on Sunday and it was hard - you need some serious stamina to go along with your skill:
Kirikashi
4x men
4x kote men
4x do
20 seconds of kakarigeiko

Hongsermeier

I will be there on the 10th. Wife will be ther on 11th. :cross_eye

22nd July 2003, 09:56 AM
its 5x men , kote , kote men , do ,, and what ever time limit is set by shimpan

dorkusxmaximus
23rd July 2003, 01:46 PM
i still don't get what kihon shiai is...does the shimpans just judge the person on how well they do their basics or is it a shiai with only basic strikes?

xvikingx
23rd July 2003, 02:50 PM
I am not quite sure. To my understanding the shinpan are going to be judging your form. I dont see how you could have a match with predetermined cuts.

dorkusxmaximus
23rd July 2003, 02:56 PM
that's going to be hard to judge...

23rd July 2003, 03:13 PM

do you have proper tenouchi, zanshin, kime..kikentaiichi ....is your bogu on properly , men himo lined up , same length ?

checking rei, at sonkyo , are you straight , bent over, holding your shinai properly...

all the little things they will be judging ..

Hongsermeier
24th July 2003, 12:04 AM
Glad I don't have to do that, as far as I know. I just want 1st or 2nd place in kyu. Trying to get the whole set for this year. :cross_eye

Is the kihon shiai structured similarly to a reagular shiai? (ie bracketed?)

Don’t know..... I guess they have to do it like a reg. tournament. Is there team shiai for Nisei week #2 or do we have to wait till the old Gardena team tournament ( I don’t know what is called now) for any good team shiai? Is Nisei week #2 going to be divided by age? I hate how kendo is always by the locker room! I also hate how we always get the crappy medal if we win! The one good thing is that they sell nachos there! There is nothing like doing kendo in a gym that smells like cheese, chips, and Jalapeños.

misterkurukuru
28th July 2003, 05:39 PM
Oh the place that i hate is CSULB! they school is okay but the way the tournament is done sucks. Nishi is kool because they have lots of ramen places around there...if you are like jared, they also have subway! if you like your subs toasted just walk across the street from subway! as for me...orochon miso #5 !

Inouye02

Good luck to all the people in the nisei week tournament. What is it like a 50 something year old tournament? It is the first time it is going to be all kyu though. is this the first all kyu shiai in the sckf? Anyways i will try not to blow any calls today. If you think i did a bad job just come and talk to me. I will explain everything with out yelling at you!

M.K. Kawai
11th August 2003, 09:56 AM
Well, I hope I didn't blow any calls myself.... but I have one call that I doubt any of you can top!

"Get your men on NOW!!! Or you're oughta here!!!"

I was very close to kicking someone out for being really late to his match. Good thing I waited, he ended up winning the court. :cool2:

But, next time...

Sunday was a lot of fun and it was great to see and meet some more people from KWF. Thank goodness for the AC! Everyone I had a chance to watch played well even if you didn’t win. Sorry Hongs! You showed good sportsmanship even though you were bummed.

Mr. Honda had to beat me in the semifinal to get to M_French. William you’re a gentleman on the court. I am used to getting shoved around a lot it was nice to just play kendo. This year I came in 3rd again in the Women’s. I was happy but not satisfied. Gotta work harder, especially on my mae in between kote-men. Keep getting jammed up. My sensei said, “You’re making the hit, but not a valid strike.”

Mr. Kawi that was you? I am going to call you Mr. Kowai from now on. Kidding, everyone in the stands by me was saying that something really bad must have happened for you to yell. misterkurukuru, next time I’ll be sure to come and say “hi”.

I don’t know who the guy was coordinating players on court ‘B’ but I really want to thank him for doing such a great job.

See you all next week at the Pyramid for Part 2 and good luck to the yudansha.

I wish I could say the same for court C, I don't think there was a coordinator.

Honda beats me again....AARRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
I need to find a honda proof waza...and fast. Fun tourney though (except Venice team getting smoked by the fast clapping boys from Cypress).

Best part of tourney though, had to be Kurukuru's haircut.:beard:

I must say that the tournaments are more fun now that I know more people. The camaraderie is really inspiring.

Kiki, tough match. Were you hiding your kote from me? There just was no opening. You made me work hard for the one I got.

French, I got lucky again. You can score on me at practice, so I just lucked out this time. You know my style so I always have a difficult time with you. Gotta say it was sweet hearing Venice dojo being called.

Inouye, we will be cheering you on this weekend!

...Were you hiding your kote from me?

Actually, no. I was aware of your wicked kote and anticipating it however I was trying to hold a strong center and force an opening on you rather than covering my kote and consequently opening my men. But you got me anyway! Whaaaa The rest of what I was doing I’ll never tell.

What did everyone think of the Kihon Shiai? I thought it was fun even though I was sometimes not sure what was going on.

Congratulations Hongs - King of Kihon!

Congrats on your results kiki. You had a lot of balls going into your final match without a break... you won the admiration of many of people. I thought the kihon shiai was a great thing, but it was poorly managed; the kirikaeshi mess was embarrassing to watch (on court C anyway). The court management was also a challenge because we had to run after twice as many people than usual (fighters & their motodachi). Overall it was a fun day for us but I was a bit dissapointed at the low turnout of the yudansha tournament though...

Eddy

You all did a good job of wrangling people. This was such a big learning experience for everyone. The fact you could figure out who won or lost was amazing. Just about every time I thought I had lost. Also it was really great even the novices without bogu could compete.

Thanks for the compliment. The court manager did ask if I wanted a break. “Never make Sensei wait” was echoing in my thoughts so I went as soon as my breathing was under control.

So who won in the yudansha?
