The new TAC mengane is made of Tantalum carbide(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tantalum_carbide). It cost 32,550 JPY(only the mengane).
I believe IBB is originally produced by "Moribudo".

Hank.
(ps - the wikipedia article has a decimal point error in the density - it's 13.9 g/cm3)

So essentially TAC mengane will be heavier than the IBB? then y do theyeven make the TAC version?

I think it'll be TAC coated titanium, otherwise they wouldn't be able to call it a titanium men.
Titanium for lightness of weight, TAC coating for durability perhaps. Just like KITT was in Knight Rider...

i don't know, my IBB Titanium men weighs about 8 lbs. the mangane alone i'd imagine weighs about 4 to 6 lbs. put another coat of TAC on there, i can't imagine a 10 to 12 lbs men. the black grill looks cool but i think i'll pass. u know who we need on this thread? Dear mkomoto-san. ..maybe he can shed some light on this new invention.

The only reason that I can see to have a TaC coating is for scratch resistance, which, unless you're going up against people with sandpaper shinai, I don't think you'd need. I'm betting it's for looks only. It does look nice.

hey guys... I found out this week after researching online and calling up stores that there are more to just IBB. There is... IBB, IBB pro, TCC, TAC. IBB distributes better balance using just the horizontal part of the mengane (not sure on the vertical bar...). IBB pro uses every part of the mengane. TCC and TAC is a step above IBB pro in that it is either light as or almost light as regular titanium mengane with equal balance of IBB pro. Except, TCC is all red and TAC is all black.

IBB Pro mengane doesn't say "IBB Pro". The only difference is that the IBB wording is silvery instead of red.

Regular IBB is red letters, IBB Pro is gold letters.
Thanks for the info, I never did find out the difference between IBB and IBB Pro other than different color letters and better finish polish.

You got IBB Pro on your Mine?
Interestingly enough, my friend on an IBB grille that doesn't say IBB on the horizontal bar, but only on top where the himo threads through. It's not fake though as it's from Mori Budogu. I actually like it more when it doesn't say IBB kind of in your face :D

What if the IBB is in Black?

What if the IBB is in Black?
It's the color of the letters themselves that tells you the grade of the grille.
The grille itself can be coated black, but I'm not sure whether that one is the regular grade or pro grade, though I'd guess regular grade from the photos that I've seen in Kendo Nippon.
Besides, the katakana on the top left where the himo threads through should tell you whether it's pro or not.

Out of curiosity why do people want the TAC or IBB pro, doesn't it weigh almost twice as much as the standard Aluminum? What advantage do you get from wearing the heavier mengane other than its more durable?

Sorry, I should have been more clear - I was referring to the lettering.
If IBB is red and IBB pro is silver, What does Black lettering mean?

Doesn't TAC give a harder coating?

The IBB grille is only 100 grams more than the regular titanium grille.
When you move around though, it feels lighter because the center of mass is closer to the spine. I actually don't feel much weight difference between my dura grille and my IBB grille when I'm moving around, despite the weight difference.
That said, if you are just standing and waiting in line, you do feel the extra weight of the IBB.
But lighter is not always better, as having some weight helps absorb the shock of the strike.
Having a harder coating can help if you run into folks that headbutt by accident or intentionally :D

I'm stumped, I've never seen ones with black lettering :D What does the katakana say on top?
