I found this while I was taking a look on Bullshido. It's a dojo of 7th degree black belt Sensei Jim Green. Anyhow, i took a peek at his iaido page:

Which of all?!?!?!?!?!?!
" Iaidio is the study in the use of and care and history of the Japanese Samurai Sword." <---- HUH?!?!?!?!?!
"Which also includes cutting exercises." <--- how lucky are his students to be able to train ALSO in cutting. Gosh, I'd like to be his student. :cheeky:
Never mind the fact that he seems to be sweeping the edge of the sword.

Is the mistake touching the blade edge?

Take two seconds and consider if that is the way you would clean anything that is sharp. I for once like having the edge away from my body parts, thank youvery much :D
I noticed that he was a kenpo master. Why am I not surprised...

Mistakes in english would be the run on list and, and, and, instead of semicolon and commas separating the items.
It looks to me like he is inspecting the sword not cleaning it. If he is inspecting the mune, using a cloth pad to protect his fingers from the ha seems reasonable to me.
But his seiza position !!! the knees are supposed to be the width of one fist apart. He is halfway to doing cheerleader splits.

If he is inspecting it I have never seen anyone do it that way. As for his seiza, I don't have a problem there, men and women sit differently, men spread em wider.

Not typically that wide. Most men are 1-2 fist widths, women tight together.
Sword inspection is usually done without touching the blade at all. As he's got his cleaning kit right there beside him, I'm guessing he just doesn't know how to do it.
None of the nanadan guys I know would be caught dead in those bright blue hakama.

ugh, do women seriously sit that way?? Are we expected to sit that way? My sensei tells us to practice swings while in seiza, how would someone do that with their knees tight together?

Isn't it just about modesty?

I suppose this is something that varies from dojo to dojo. Most Japanese women sit with knees together, which is a cultural thing. I tell women that they can sit that way, or like the men. Many of them choose to sit knees together.

Uh, sorry about the double post, but my computer decided to just ignore me... Had to restart and now I see my answer was actually posted!
Well, what I wanted to say: As far as I know it is about modesty, especially in Japan, but that's just what I've been told, I've never been there (yet).
Personally, I usually sit with my knees together, but sometimes also a bit apart, and no one told me to keep them together. :)

Think kimono vs. hakama and you have your answer to this. You cannot sit in a kimono with your knees apart and sit properly in it. In a hakama this does not apply. That is why women are told to sit the same as men in a hakama.
If my wife's dance sensei saw her sit like that in a kimono she would whop her up along side the head.

Pre-Iaido training I used to sit with my knee over 3-4 maybe 5 fists apart. Sitting with knees tight together has many benefits. To be able execute quick Nukitsuke, your tight doesn’t fall asleep as quickly during long lecture. : )

ok mistakes:
the obi. so many thing wrong with this:
1) he should be wearing it under his hakama. since he is wearing his hakama his obi should be ON.
2)its a rather thin one really worn. heprobably thinks it shows his grade. Iaido doesnt have belt grades.
his seiza looks like crap. looks like hes just sitting on his heels. you should have tension in your legs when sitting in seiza, you dont want to cut off your bloodstream.
Im a pretty noob iaidoka, so If Im mistaken please confront me :p

I second that.
Power rangers look better compared to this sensai bunch.
I guess the sensai was inspired by some female anime character as far as his sitting position is concerned.

And the last 'older fart' seems the have the wrong foto pose compared to the others - he has his wrong foot in front.................
Does also look a bit as they are wearing something that resembles a tenegui yet worn a bit - uhm - different.
And that Matt Harvey guy has an expression on his face as if he is trying to look at the flower on his forehead.

Gosh that blue hakama is really erm......
sh*tty.
I thought that it was always considered a bit of an MA faux pas to have a top darker than the bottoms ( unless it is kimono with hakama).
Oh, and I have seen visting Japanese Sensei 'correct' women who sit in seiza with their legs together. (not suggesting they put them over their knees and spank them - just tell them to sit knees one fist distance apart for seitei and two for koryu; approx)
