Im going to japan this summer and then later again this fall. The second time I'm going to stay for a couple of months and then I would like to do some work to get pocket money.
My question is: how, if possible, do I do to get a temporary greencard so that I can earn some money while I'm there. I have been offered temp jobs of simple kind like restaurants 'n' stuff.
Are there any web recources on the topic.
Greetings
Hi Nils.
To be able to work in Japan, you need to have a visa which permits you to do so. If you just turn up in Japan without obtaining a visa, you will be issued a 90 day tourist visa at immigration. However, you are not permitted to work while in Japan with this visa. You will have to obtain a work visa, working holiday visa or a cultural visa before arriving in Japan. A work visa requires that you have a company to sponsor you. A Working Holiday visa would be great for what you want to do, but the working holiday arrangement is only established with certain countries (my home of New Zealand is one of them). The cultural visa or student visa also requires an organisational sponsor (school, university, or in your case, a kendo teacher who will take you under their wing). With these visas, it is possible to work part time, but you need permission, and hours are regulated.
Basically, if you want to come to Japan to earn pocket money, it is difficult to do it legally without lots of prior preparation. I suggest you go to the Japanese embassy or Consulate Office in your country and discuss your options, and the criteria for each visa.

Nils,
Although strictly speaking Alex is correct about how one should go to Japan with the appropriate visas if you plan to work. It is however rather easy to find work in most of the large cities in Japan. If you know where to look it should not take you too long to find part time work either teaching English or working in one of the many outsiderEbars downtown. Be flexible and smart about who and where you ask for work.
Have fun and be safe.
