Hi, Y'all..
Nito ... is short sword and longsword.

Is there a form in Kendo where you utilise two shortswords?

or maybe just a single short sword?

Just wondering... :)

just to make my thought process a little clearer..
The thought came to me when watching Kata at a grading yesterday.
If in Kata we learn how to use a shortsword... why does no one use it in fencing?
and if we do not use it in fencing... why must we learn it in Kata??

(I am not Kata bashing nor saying there should be a direct correlation between Kata and fencing)

Tankendo, i believe is the bayonet blade when taken off the rifle(jukendo). if im not mistaken i believe they use shoto for this style of training and also utilise kodachi foer training, but i cant be sure on the targets or techniques etc....i know there is a sensei in Leistershire who is 4-5thdan in both jukendo and tankendo.

Effectively, we learn it in kata now to give you more of an appreciation of ma-ai, and obviously it reflects kendo's origins from the various ryu-ha that contained any number of weapons that you would need to master.

At our dojang, Sabumnim (Master) often uses only a shoto when he does sparring against us.

It must be really crushing when he beats the tar out of you with only a short sword!!
I mean a full shinai in your hands and he is still able to beat your maai!

YEAH! He beat 4 people at the same time using just the shoto...

Some koryu use 2 short swords, Tendo-ryu for example. Can't think of any other examples right now, though.

two guys with a short sword each ? ;-)

John Shaw who founded Kendo in Stoke used to fence with a single shoto. I always wondered how the hell it was that me with a long sword would find myself being given a hiding and getting backed into a corner of the dojo by an old guy with 2 artifical hips and a short sword

(its not just because im crap at kendo - he really understood how to take distance and command the fight with ki)

Thats a good point... does anyone know of anyone who have fenced this way?
