Subject: Niten Ichi-ryu seminar heads-up

Just a quick note for those interested in Hyo Ho Niten Ichi Ryu kenjutsu that there will be a seminar at the University of Guelph the second weekend in September (Sept 13-14 2003) with headmaster Masayuki Imai sensei, Iwami sensei (Menkyo Kaiden) and Colin Watkin (Hyakutake).

So clear that weekend from your calendar, tell those interested in Musashi, and stand by for further information to come.

If there's interest, we may also set up a preliminary seminar in Guelph in August for those who want to get a bit more out of the seminar in September. (It's always best to know a bit about the subject before getting to the main seminar).

Mark your calendars now.
Kim.

I'd be interested in seeing that event. Can't participate as I just do kendo. Or at least, I just try to do kendo.
In regards to Watkin-sensei, is he the one who puts the Hyaku in Hyakutake? ;)
Be good to see anyhow, Hyaku or otherwise.

Two seminars happening this and next month folks, for those who are into kenjutsu and the koryu.

The pre-seminar for those who want to get a bit more out of the practice, will be August 21, 10am-3pm at the University of Guelph athletics department. Price is $40.

This is a fundraiser for the main seminar which will feature Masayuki Imai sensei, headmaster (soke) of HyoHo Niten Ichiryu, and Toshio Iwami sensei, menkyo kaiden as well as Colin Watkin (Hyakutake) who will be translating.

This seminar will run from Sept 11 to 14 and details are at: http://www.uoguelph.ca/~iaido/iai-nitenseminar.html along with a link to the registration page.

This seminar will be of great importance to anyone who is interested in the sword style of Miyamoto Musashi so please, don't miss it. Beginners are welcome but encouraged to try to attend the pre-seminar as well as the main seminar.

If you have any questions about the event, please don't hesitate to contact Kim Taylor at kataylor@uoguelph.ca

Also, since this is short notice, please echo this notice into any groups that may have an interest in the seminars.

Subject: Niten Ichiryu seminar

Just a quick reminder to everyone about the HyoHo Niten Ichiryu seminar being held in Guelph Ont. Sept 11-14. Instructing will be the headmaster Imai Masayuki, Iwami sensei, a menkyo kaiden and Colin Watkin (Hyakutake) a senior student from the head dojo in Japan.

Some quick answers to questions asked so far.

1. No there isn't a closer place for you to learn Niten Ichiryu. It isn't
the kind of thing you find on the street corner, so if you can't travel I suggest the local yellow pages dojo. ;)

2. You can come for the weekend only, the two evening sessions are not prerequisites.

3. Yes you can come if you don't know the style, don't have equipment, are just curious about koryu in general. We're all beginners and I've made a bunch of extra bokuto to borrow or buy.

4. Yes Imai sensei really is the "soke".

5. Yes Colin will leave his scuba equipment at home so no danger of having to carry his weight belt and tanks around for him.

6. Yes there's still room in the class, lots of it.

7. Yes it will be of benefit for you to come and practice even if you
won't be practicing once you go home again, knowledge is good, you'll learn lots of things that apply to whatever martial art you already do.

OK see you all soon and remember, registration prices go up considerably "at the door" so get in touch if you plan to come... I have enough bokuto for those who are coming now, but you may be using a broom handle if you show up last minute.

Kim.

I was fortunate enough to attend this seminar so I'll be putting together a decent report for everyone here. I've only been doing kendo for a little less than two years, so I won't be able to go as in-depth as many of the others who attended. However, I will try my best.

An update on the status of Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu is available here (http://www.bunbun.ne.jp/~sword/inuag.html), courtesy of Hyakutake-sensei. I hope that all who attended the seminar will be able to return this year.
