Do we really need a flames section?

I think it helps. Even if some people don't like it, it will keep all the stuff that they may not want to read and any flames all in one place and keeps everywhere else clean and polite. Then people have no excuses for flaming each others comments in other threads because all flames belong here.

If it's got nothing to do with kendo, get rid of it.

allthough the connection between society/civilization and Kendo isn't allways that clear so I guess it's upp to the poster to critically view his/her intention of his/her post.

Well, considering how civil the rest of the BBS has been since the flame section was added, I would say yes :).
Secondly, I do also think it is a valuable addition to building (warning: cliche words follows) an online community. For better and for worse, it does give us an opportunity to see what the 'others' think about non-kendo issues.
I use a couple of BBS's an all of them have an 'off-topic' area where pretty much anything goes.

Get rid of flames and flamers  Call it training in composure, call it what you want, but people need to chill out and keep topics aimed at kendo. If people have a problem with the colour of Adolf's underwear, they should go find the appropriate forum....if people have issues with each other, they should know better to get roped in to an argument. Instigating/attacking should be punishable by the laws of confound, after all we are all in this for the greater enjoyment of kendo, thats all.

I find people that are easily angered are easy to beat in kendo, their composure goes after you push them, then they cant think straight

There is no need for a flames section this is a Kendo forum if there are idiots who want to start petty arguments to get a reaction let thoes people do it on a different forum.

The internet is full of chat rooms and forums if people want to let off steam- let them do it at other sites.

Having said this, the poll appears to be 50-50 so perhaps it may be a good idea just to leave it where it is? :ermm:

Trash the flame section...... it is a waste of storage. If someone wishes to talk about something so blatently non-kendo related then why come onto the Kendo world forum to discuss it.....!!

(for those about to abuse me about my responses on the airline food thread..... :lick: )

(for those about to abuse me about my responses on the airline food thread..... :lick: )

Anybody wishing to travel abroad and take part in internatinal taikai will sooner or later be faced with airline food....this is kendo related brother! :normal:

I quite like the flames section. It belongs to the General Chat part, and it does not disrupt the Kendo-related discussion.

It's interested to see what else people know besides Kendo, as there is life outside Kendo. At least I enjoy reading the stupidity and ignorance (including my own  ).

I prefer it being called "Spontaneous combustion"...

(me and my big mouth)

I haven't been here long enough to see the long-term effects of having a flames section (i.e. less flames on kendo-related boards).

People will only post there if they know what they say will offend someone or other, and are just doing it to get a reaction, anyone who actually wants to discuss non-kendo things (including politics) without provoking others would post it in general chat.

I don't like the fact that it's needed, but if it means there's less ignorant bile in the kendo related (and general chat) boards then it's a necessary evil.

but still evil :devious:

I disagree. If we want to build an online community, we should try to accomodate non-kendo topics...I mean, you do talk about other things than kendo with the people you practice with, don't you?

mingshi and JSchmidt - you took the words right out of my mouth. At least you know what you’re getting into when you check out the Flames.

The section allows us to know which of the posters are potentially dangerous and criminally stupid. Better to give the mentally ill an outlet.

I think it was Samurai999 who said something along the lines of if you don't like it you don't have to read it. You can get rid of the Flames sections but people are still going to post stupid crap. I feel at least the Flames section will keep it seperate.

I like the flames section. It allows people to vent and talk about things that can make people upset while not disrupt things too much. Besides, it is always cool to hear others opinions on varying matters. If this fourm was only about training, waza and shiai and the like it would be still informative but very boring community. Judging by some of the posts in the WKC meetup thread, most of you do not seem boring.

Isn't what you think about and do outside of the dojo/dojang part of your kendo as well? I think your personality and activities do influence how you do your kendo so it would be an aspect of kendo.

It is in a different section of the fourm. When you click on the flames section you will know what you are getting into, and like everything else on this fourm, if you do not want to read it, then don't click on it.

blah, blah, blah, I talk too much.

No - like a dojo. No politics or insults please.

Get rid of the flames section.

why is everyone trying to get rid of this? any real reason? besides "it's stupid" or "waste of space". I think thats someone elses job to worry about.

The question was asked about the flame section and people have answered.

When a person whom is not yet a member of this forum visits the board for the first time it is likely that he/she checks "Todays active threads".
Since the flames section is always active he/she will certainly check the threads in there.
Then he/she will not get a very good impression and probably leave.
Is this good? I think not.
