And I was very impressed at this art.
Kenjutsu and Kendo trains you to fight with the sword, and only with the sword, with not so much leg/arm kempo without the sword.
Ninjutsu on the other hand is a highly powerful arm-arm combat system also incorporating weapons use (including the katana). However it should be noted that weapons skills of Ninjutsu is about 40%-60% as good as Kenjutsu.
I was mainly very impressed at the power and counter attacks encompassed by using simple arm-lock, arm-punch, and leg-lock systems. I surely want to continue this, but my style of self practice kenjutsu is still not perfect.....for obvious reasons...lol...
I have done martial arts (mainly kendo) for about 4 (total of 7 if you count the self practice years) years now, and my philosophy of "Knowing all martial arts to become the best fighter, is actually null" holds true in the class, because the sensei I was talking to said "Ninjas learn from all martial arts, they make friends with anyone with a completely different martial artist, like [myself]", so I said "Well for me to do this is not my style of art, because no one can fully master the first art fully", "Even after 7 years, I have a lot more techniques to learn, or fine tuning of kendo/kenjutsu itself.".
The sensei had a thought and was impressed at that philosophy of mine, but said in return, "Well this is my style, and since it's my style, it's my way of perfecting it."
It will surely logically help me a lot when there is no sword available, which I will use Ninjutsu for that reason only, but not in the case of learning every single form of martial art that Ninjutsu has incorporated so far.
But anyways, if any of you are looking for a really good hand to hand combat art, Ninjutsu is surely the one to go for.

Besides, didn't Han say he is Shodan in Kendo or something?...do you think he can self-train Kendo instead??

To actually answer this post seriously, I think the Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu people are doing some quite nice stuff.
I would probably not enjoy it though since they "do it all". Lots of different weapons and unarmed. The unarmed skills seems nice, but all swordwork I have seen from BBT people have been, to say the least, poor.
Granted, I have not seen the masters, but still at least one yudansha, and none of them had ever ever cut with a sword. Still, they seemed to sometime train with iaito... :ninja:
Sometimes ninjers can be comical relief, when they show up for iaido-class. I still remember this guy who asked if "we always stood like this", because "in ninjutsu we are supposed to be able to fight on any type of ground, even rolling balls!". What do you answer that?
In the locker room he asked me wether we had any "jumping attacks" in kendo, and I replied that all attacks are more or less a jump (fumikomi). But then he said "no, like when you jump up in the air and strike on the way down, it has to be really effective". I just kindly explained to him that any kendoka with some experience would easily hit you two or three times just on your way up. Then he shut up ;)
Anyone else have funny "ninjer" stories?

Sure, anyone can self-train in something they have studied. There may be a development issue though, depending upon the ability and experience of the kenshi.
Can someone learn koryu from a book? No. They are fooling themselves, yet these people genuinely think they are studying the art in question.

Oh yeah. I forgot about that. I only just heard of that a couple months ago in a manga I read. It's not any more formal than San, according to the honorifics notes in the manga "Kaze Hikaru."
It said: "Han: The same as the honorific -San, pronounced in the dialect of southern Japan."

I've never heard anyone use -han as an honorific outside of a jidaigeki (it sounds rather archaic). It's just a colloquial variation of -san: the meaning is the same.
-han as a suffix in modern Japanese usually means 'crime' or 'criminal' (犯).
Or maybe he was just thinking of Han Solo.
Edit: beaten to it. I'm up early for keiko and my brain's working far too slowly!

This thread seems to have really gotten out of hand. I know that self training is looked down upon here, as it's not something that I'm too fond of myself. But now it seems like you guys are just out to get him now while using whatever possible avenue you can.
Kendoka Han has chosen a path that is different from what we believe is correct. We've stated our case and he's stated his so it's time to just let the thread die or turn it into something constructive.

It's not the fact that he's selfpracticing that bugs me. I've gotten used to all the self trained XMA ninjer ballet dancers. What pisses me off is the fact that he's been lying. In his bio he claims to be a assistent instructor, but he wrote on the forum that he quit kendo. His bio also says that he's a nidan, he also admitted he's not, he claims to self train an iai Ryu without proper instructions... do I need to go on here?
And be honest, how can a thread called "I recently took a ninjutsu class" turn into something constructive? This thread was doomed from the moment it was posted.

I've never heard anyone use -han as an honorific outside of a jidaigeki (it sounds rather archaic). It's just a colloquial variation of -san: the meaning is the same.
You here it a lot in Osaka....but usually in friendly terms like お婆はん or 嫁はん rather than names per se, though you do still here it used in that manner. Its got a very friendly feeling.
For the 2 above examples think "granny" and "trouble and strife" !!!

Tell us more about this "Orgasmo" friend of yours...
Orgasmo was a film with Matt Stone and Trey Parker and as you can probably guess from that, its a piss take of porn...I wish I had a friend called Orgasmo, but I am not too keen on trying quadruple penetration especially when that would require some over the top male bonding if you get my drift. See, this is what happens when ninjas are brought into the equation; you end up talking about porn because no gives a flying turd over dudes who look like the black power ranger, are undoubtedly morbidly obese and take the whole concept of live action role playing too far...
(I am really a ninja...I have been making these comments so I can conceal my true identity and infiltrate the anti-ninja massiv...only us ninjas with specs the size of the hubble telescope should be able to read this)

It seems there is a little confusion concerning Kendoka Hans creds.
When this guy first began posting, I offered an invitation for him to come train at my dojo- afterall, he is in my city, and trained at one of the clubs I have high respect for, and said he was nidan. Great, all seemed fine. I was willing to give the benefit of the doubt to a 18yr old who may have some odd ideas, but who may be willing to continue kendo correctly.
Through his posts and PMs to me, it became clear that this guy trained for 3 years to shodan (perhaps, I havent been able to verify this yet). He thought his fellow kendoka were "arrogant" and therfore during training went out of his way to injure them. He then quit, and moved to another dojo, where he soon quit again.
For the 2 years since then he has "kept up his kendo practice" in his backyard, and graded himself to nidan, per his profile.
He has never been trained in kenjitsu or iai. All self-taught.
He currently goes to a ninja dojo where he is apparently an "assistant kendo instructor". He is apparently going to teach them kendo, and/or kenjitsu. I dont think his dojo is legit - it claims to teach kendo and "nito" (??) but Ive never seem any students from this dojo grade or compete.
So, Kendoka_Han, I take back the invitation. By the sounds of it you are a petulant child with a big ego, who has an anger management problem. We have quite a few beginners at our club and I wouldnt want them subjected to that sort of behaviour. Its unacceptable however you justify it. Plus the fact that you could give them erroneous advice (like how you told a guy in one thread to do suburi with his feet pointed out).
Im not the instructor at my club, so if you wanted to join you would have to talk to him.
However, if you do, keep in mind that he will not hesitate to bring hellfire and brimstone on your sorry ass if you tried any of your past antics.

Self-graded to nidan, claims to be a "self practitioner of kenjutsu and iaido. The boy certainly does a lot of things by himself. He gets points for consistency...

-han as a suffix in modern Japanese usually means 'crime' or 'criminal' (犯).
Or maybe he was just thinking of Han Solo.

Judging a dojo from a website is always pretty tricky and ill advised. From my brief look it seemed that some of their members take their self defense/martial arts training very seriously, and have done so for a very long time. They should be given the benefit of the doubt. It might just be that their website volunteer just got carried away.
It is more likely that mr kendoka-Ham, (sorry mr Kendoka-han) is not representing his dojo in their best light.

Hi Scott,
You are right. They might be the real deal, it is likely that they are not. Are they claiming lineage and training that they don't have? All important questions.
However, this is a kendo forum. There are forums where your skepticism is very appropriate and where the skill set to answer, debate, and evaluate your questions and their martial arts skills are present. This is not one of them.
Lets stick to our focus ... kendo. They do not claim to teach kendo. All the other important issues are not ours.
Unfortunately Kendoka-han who claimed to be 4th dan sensei in kendo,.... no wait 2nd,.... no wait 1st, .... no wait... is not 7 years old. If he is indeed an instructor.... no wait assistant instructor... no wait a volunteer hitting dummy, perhaps his club should be informed of his imaginary credentials. It is likely that they already know, have taken it into consideration and is the reason he is the club hitting dummy. It is one way to knock some sense into someone I suppose.
BTW, he claims that his real life nickname is kendoka-han and that he is proud of it. Given that he tends to exagerate I wonder if he is really 19, ....no wait 17, ....no wait 15... no wait 11...
