View Full Version : Is this usual?

I had little emotional problems recently (you know - puberty... It's horrible! ) and fell into a little slump. Even without this it became harder for me to go to practise. I wanted to ask you: Is this usual? If so, how do you deal with this?

Whenever I feel like I don't want to go to practice and I start rationalizing, what helps me is to go into "Robot mode": I just let my mind and problems go into the ether and drive myself to practice on autopilot. when I get to practice, and by the end of the warm up, it's too late for me to leave, and I'm always glad that I came.
For me, Kendo is the music that chases my blues away.

Yep, it happens to everyone. What you do is make yourself go anyway. My instructor told me that the nights that you force yourself to go to the dojo are the times when you will learn the most. So, I make myself go so I don't miss out on that extra learning! :)

That makes sense. Every time I've "forced" myself to go, I've always left the class thinking "wow that was great, I learned so much tonight, I'm glad I didn't stay home!"

Yup that about sums it up for all of us who practice any martial art. The hardest part of the lesson is the turning up.

Going to practice usually takes my bad feelings away. Regardless of how depressed or stressed or upset I may be about something, kendo helps me to vent through a physical outlet and the focusing on keiko helps to clear my head. One of the reasons I love kendo is that it is one of the few activities in my life that clears my head and makes everything silent. Then I can feel all peaceful and tackle life's problems one by one because I am calm again.

Hey, thanks for the response!
Nice answers here.
@nodachi: Hehe, for me it's hard to not think about (you would say: not existing) problems...Even at keiko.. But I will force myself a little, that's gonna help ^^ ;D
Thanks for the answers!

I have a bigger problem. I don't want to go to work, I don't want to find a girlfriend, and sometimes, I even ponder about not going to kumdo lesson.
Your case sounds minor to me.

There was a couple of times when I really didn't want to go to the dojang, but I know I'll have fun and learn a lot if I go. Like everyone here, I force myself to go for those moments. On somedays, I had even decided not to go, but turn up in the dojang later, get scolded for being late, then practice. Only couple of times did I regret going, and those were the days when my sensei was out for business or out sick.

Can't remember puberty much - it's too far in the past. Remember the acne, being too shy to chat up females - hang on, that last bit's still true!

Puberty does suck but you can get through it if your remember these things:
1. She likes you just as a friend, nothing more
2. Your not different, listening to crap music doesn't mean your odd
3. People do understand you, they just can't be arsed
4. One day you will wake up and feel fine
Stop being moopy and go to kendo. Forcing yourself to go is normal, I can't be botherd till im taking my men off at the end, I think I must hate kendo.

HAhahahah puberty was always about a girl. Then she turned out to be a slag and sleep with the guy in the year above at a party, one week later your over it and you can have a conversation without slamming a door or having your voice break.
Everyone can relate to this. If you can +rep me!

I spent a lot of time trying to reason myself out of handful of crushes I had because I knew they were not my type. No girls are my types when I analyze it, but hopefully one might come close in the future.
Unfortunately my access to information like that was very limited since I did not like socializing with the crowd associated with the girl because...well you know how school is divided in to factions. So it took me a long time to get over it. Funny thing is, I never really liked the girls I had crush on. This was profoundly annoying.

But they were the "rebel" group at school wern't they. You were her best friend but she got drawn into the group of the cool kids untill one had his way with her at a party. Then you thought "shes changed" and relised you idolized her but didn't actualy like her. She was short and cute looking.
This is where I would use the term Crank. Its part of the healing process.

Um... I'm not sure if I understand. She was in one of my classes. I never talked to her. She was in the upper hierarchy of social structure in school and I was not part of the hierarchy at all.
I didn't like talking to her. To be honest, I don't know why I even liked her. I think it's because my friend kept on saying she was hot. I was like 'eh', but I guess it got to my head. She was cute, yeah...not short though.
To this day, I have no idea why I like the girls that I do not find attractive. It's a bit what-the-hell moment. Yet I can't stop thinking about her. I know better than to submit to it...I have no damn reason to like her nor do I really want to. So eventually that passed. Feels good to be free really. Then 3 years later, she changed drastically. I guess she went into rebel forces or something. But by that time I was 3 years over her and on to the biggest blunder of my life. But that is another painful story.

These two passages help me, thanks. I realise that puberty is different for everyone more than I thought... Or perhaps I just think that I am different from most. But I will eventually realise that I am not ^^
Thanks for the tips... And no, it's not (really) about a girl. In fact I have a girlfriend (for about 1.75 years now) which I am happy with like hell! My problems are, that I start seeing the first problems ever, I start worrying and I don't really have the right perspective on the problems I worry about (I see elephants where there are flies. Oh, no flies! Where there is air. ). But it's ok, I keep learning every day and it's starting to be no real problem anymore ^^
Nice thread! ;D
I will force myself to kendo next time... It's a pitty that I didn't manage to the last two times...

Also as others have suggested, cranking may help although you have to learn to do it efficiently otherwise if your family catches you, you might go into an uncontrollable downward crank spiral involving vampire porn and mega buckets

Yes there is nothing that says "your going to a councillor" more than coming home to find your son abusing himself while watching a work out video in the lounge with his trousers neatly folded on the side, with his shirt and shoes still on blubbing away like hes just watched Forest Gump alllll over again.
Make sure they are out...

"your going to a councillor"
And then you have to deal with some menopausal woman with dangly earings and an annoyingly neutral tone of voice that would make the Swiss look like war mongers. But if you're going through puberty and gilfs are your thing, that wouldn't be so bad as you could still prop a trouser tent over imagining how experienced she probably is.
