there i was, after being sick for awhile, i went back to dojo for first time in 3 weeks. most of those 3 weeks were spent in bed being sick.. barely able to eat anything other than rice and water.. feeling rather weak, and no energy.. and what do i see in the dojo? a new student. rather young, cute looking girl. asian.. by the look of her face, she is korean, but her legs say she's japanese. wearing almost nothing... that is tank top, and short short gym shorts.. basically leaving nothing to imagination.

and, i'm thinking.. yes, we tell the beginners that they need to wear something comfortable, and something where we can see their legs for footwork, but that's just too little on a full grown girl.

what did rest of you ladies wore to your first kendo class?

peteI'll make sure to bring the boeing-o-love with me.

On a slightly more serious note, and back on topic surprisingly enough, we had a young lady a while back who, whilst dressed aproppriately enough outside, seemed to be lacking in (hmm, how to tactfully put it...) "inner control" shall we say.....I find these things difficult to approach without coming across as lecherous, so I had to ask one of the female members of the dojo to mention it to her.......anyone else had this, and how did you deal with it? It was fairly off putting during keiko, but totally impossible to mention.

you mean the big bouncing distraction :p its a tricky situation :p on one hand, it distracts from your kendo, on the other hand, it can sometimes be such a pretty sight

Educate me... what is the difference between Japanese and Korean women's legs?

Sounds like normal gym clothes. You can tell it is spring, hormones are in full bloom and you aren't getting any :). Take a cold shower Pete, your not training in Afghanistan.

typical korean girls have rather straight legs. typical japanese girls have bowed leg. this girl's legs were somewhere in between. some what bowed.

yes.. we are not in afghanistan. and i do enjoy beautiful sights.. but at kendo dojo? that's like adding water to my beer.. or ice to my whisky.. or.. or.. drinking unsweeten iced tea below bible belt! actually.. i prefer my iced tea without sugar.

uh... where have u been? haha. all girls dress like that these days, even when they're just out shopping or walking around. And they usually go to the gym wearing sports bra and spendex short shorts. Haven't seen that from a kendo person, though. But tank top and short shorts i've seen plenty (at kendo).

I wore t-shirt and loose training trousers back then. I've never seen any of our female kohai wear less than that yet, maybe because our dojo is very breezy :) but I don't know in summer time.

Hm, maybe I'm a prude as well, but I figured that I shouldn't wear anything that short to practise... I wore a t-shirt and sweatpants, and that's what every other beginner I've seen until now does.
I don't think my instructor would allow tank tops and/or shorts...

Solinde

I wore a t-shirt and sweatpants

That's the same as I wore, and also the same as what we ask our beginners to wear to practice. Then of course, we don't have much problems with high temperatures...

I wore a big hooded sweatshirt and sweat pants. It was winter when I started.
But thats what I usually wear to the gym anyhow. Wouldn't think of wearing things that let bits of flab hang out, or excessive bouncing.. that starts to hurt.
After the first practices I would feel really bad about not working up much of a sweat after seeing everyone else take off thier men, So i headed straight for the gym afterwards, it was really convient to be dressed for it already.

tank top and gym shorts? Nothing wrong with that. Here in summer you wear that everywhere or sweat your ass off. Half our beginners are wearing that now, guys and girls.

Enjoy the sight, once she wears hakama and gi its all over!

Well this young lady seemed interested in kendo Pete.... so try not to scare her off.. lol. I wish my memory was better... I've already forgotten her name, but we'll see if she shows up next week. She was a bit timid, but most beginners are. By the end of practice she was starting to land some decent men strikes though. She didn't really seem all that scantily clad to me, but I work at the University so there are young women everywhere.

During our hot summers, the standard issue clothing is a poncho and wellies. You have to take the wellies off before you come into the dojo, though.

Tanks (or singlets in OZ) are not allowed in our dojo. I've been wearing sweat pants and a tshirt....

As for the bounce factor I think its a good tactic to put off your opponent - but very uncomfortable! ;) But Ive just picked up some more sports bras!

My hakama and gi should be here in a couple of weeks - I'm looking forward to my skin turning blue!

So, you are the one being uncomfortable, not her.

Maybe your dojo should ask everyone to wear tank tops and trunks.

I was outfitted with gi and hakama the very moment I stepped into the dojo. Of course, I promtly put both legs into one hakama leg and said "what does this other bit do?"

I do some iaido too though, and you can't really train without the proper attire.

Wow, I can imagine starting into a thread and not reading pages 3 through 111 but the first post? How do you know whats it about? :) I remember a woman like that in Karate, I was 15, she was 27ish and until she got keidogi wore a sportsbra and hotpants (we did train in a gym). Still though, hard to concentrate.

During our warm summers... wait, we don't have warm summers, we have a slightly sunnier winter, come to think of it the warmest month so far has been march.

I wore what I had been wearing to yoga at the time: capris and a racerback-tank top. Sensei exclaimed! Your pants, they're perfect! Everyone always asks me what to wear to kendo as beginners, and we always end up tucking up their long pants or the shorts aren't respectful... They cover you well but still show your feet! What are these pants called? "Capris, Sensei." "Capris!" He actually went and wrote it down, asked me to spell it-- I saw it on the website on 'Tips for Beginners' a week or so later... heh heh heh, I think it's kinda funny. He's said that tank tops aren't fully proper, but since they're what I can most easily move my arms in, I'm a-keeping it...
Heh, it's a testament to the fact that I've lived almost my entire life in Florida-- you people speak of seasonal changes... You can't live in this area (at least not south of I4) without air conditioning. It's just. not. possible. Even where I live, in public housing, we don't have toilets that flush (or as Zap Brannagan might say, they're set to 'Stun,' not 'Kill.') but you'd better BELIEVE we have A/C. There'd be a riot. So down here, it's a pleasant 68F all year-round. At least inside... we don't go outside unless we have to for about three-quarters of the year, either.
Yeah, I wanna move.

As it says on the little information-thingie on the upper right hand of the box my post was in, I'm from Sarasota.
Neil... so you were here that day? Wasn't it a glorious 12 hours? Heh, and only a Canadian would call "freezing everywhere" 'lovely.' Seskatchewan, too! Well, if you wanna go for cold, you might as well go all out. I should also mention that the actual peninsula, the part that sticks out into the ocean, is almost totally different from the panhandle region. The panhandle and the area latitudinally-similar are much more like Georgia: swampier in places, but also much more like the other parts of Southeastern Appalachia in terms of climate and foliage. ... in case anyone cared. Right, I'm piping down now.

pete

:alien:rather strange.....

hmmmm....i wud think...a tall korean/japanese girl wud have straight legs and a short korean/japanese girl wud have bowed legs...it depends on the height...mostly asians have stout legs, big faces...but a average 5'8'' girl wud have slender straight legs(if she is thin though)

i agree that mostly korean girls are taller than average japanese girls....but thats changing really fast.....

Chill man, it's cool! I'm sarcastic by nature, and I don't mean to come off as harsh. I need to learn to add winky-faces to my posts so people know I'm joking. Which I almost always am. Just for posterity's sake.
Jacksonville's quite a far ways away, but I do hear that there's a place near there; I remember from when I was searching for "Kendo dojo + FL" in my search engine before I found Gulf Coast Kendo. Which rocks and I totally recommend. We're the best and we even have three (four if you wanna be technical) locations where sessions are held. I can't wait for these stupid bring-me-down holidays are over and Kendo starts up again... after all of the emotional trauma of the past few weeks, I need to start hitting things with sticks again and I mean pronto. Practicing alone in the backyard isn't as satisfying, and besides, the neighbors stare. Not that I would normally mind, but the rednecks to the one side of us ... well, the only thing they are more than crazy is armed.

(((Oh HELLZ YEAH Ghost in the Shell is starting. I'm so glad [as] is airing it again! I'm officially NOT HERE for the next half-hour.)))

hi nice to meet you.

we shared the same name... *i almost had a heart attack then!* but I am in Victoria, Melbourne, Monash University.

i will definately get a different Zekken!

most ppl in our beginner's class are sensible - t-shirts and tracksuit pants. although 1 girl did turn up in jeans, and another idiot wore a jumper during a 27 degree day.

didn't notice anything weird on the beginners with the top two exceptions, but then again i was concentrating on trying not to kill anyone by accident.
