hey guys, I've got a question for you, when you first wore your bogu, did you back hurt ? Especially around the lower back area ? It was my 2nd time to do ji geiko last night, and I couldn't continue because my back was aching. It never was painful before, but when I wore bogu...it started happening, what am I doing wrong you think ?

me too ! the men is quite heavy...hrmmm but if it's bad posture..it was never hurting before, my back is straight..and...it's not bending at all...could it be the men ? or..hrmmm there's something else that iv missed ?

Gotta be the men...the men gane and the area where it conects (I dont know what you call that part) is real heavy so after a while your back tires from supporting it. Cant wait untill I have the money for a new light one.

I try to keep good posture as well, however last weekend I took part in a ferocious atari-tari (sp?). The next day I had an ache in my lower back, over my left leg.
I believe the collision has jarred me somewhat.
maybe you are the same?

The problem with backaches, is that it can be caused by a multitude of things. I've been suffering (in varying degree) from lower backproblems over the last couple of years...but if anything, kendo has helped my getting over that!.
Most common cause is bad working posture..after that (or combined) is weak abdominal muscles. To strengthen your back, you need to work on the front!.
Anyways..it's not necessary the men...you could be tensing up, if you are not used to wearing armor..also, your lower back shouldnt be completly straight, but slightly curved out. (as when you are sitting).
Take my word for it. See a physio straight away. Backproblems should not be left alone...the pain can hit you far worse than, say, having a wisdom tooth pulled..and it wont go away in a couple of days!.
Have your basic hip/knee/back functions checked by a physio and if they check out ok, have someone look you over when you practice.

Yeah I'm ok now thanks. I went for a run the same day, and I have managed to do some bagwork. (atari-tari into a hanging punchbag)
thanks again :)

Whoops! Sory bout that! Haven't used this bloody beta version thingy before.
I was just going to say, as did Jakob, that lower back aches are very often from tension in kamae. If your'e in kamae for a long time or a bit nervous (like in a grading) the tension can show as a tightness in the muscles of the lower back. Learn to relax consciously those muscles (much easier said than done unfortunately) and you'll find it goes away.
Jakob I think I nkow what you mean by "slightly curved out", but I think this is a bad image to give someone, as it could lead to them attempting to consciously "curve out" their spine, which is hyperextension and is not good, either from a kamae or a medical point of view.

It could well be tare if the Hakama knot interferes there or you tie tare too tight..
