Last Saturday, my sensei nominated me for ikkyu. He'd told me to check the BKA site for details of when and where.
But I couldn't find any info.
Is it me being stupid? Can anyone help?

Check out http://www.kendo.org.uk/newsevents/events.shtml
19th October - Shinsa: Ikkyu-Yondan the day after the Lidstone taikai.
I would have said that I would see you there but I will be in Toronto at the time.
Best of luck, if you decide to go.

Also you need to send in your application to the Grading Officer 2 months before... so that would be by 19th August.

The Shinsa is on the Sunday after the Lidstone Taikai, at Mumeishi dojo.
That'll probably be a mini pre-grading seminar after the Lidstone. More info on the next BKA newsletter I believe.
BTW I am one of the organizers of this Taikai. If you give in some bribe, I'll arrange a good luck ribbon on your back :D Hahaha.

Ok ok ok, so the lidstone is on the saturady @ Nenriki Dojo, and the grading is on the sunday @ Mumeishi.

Yes D'Artagnan, Lidstone/Sat/Nenriki, Shinsa/Sun/Mumeishi.
BTW for those going for the Lidstone, let me warn you not to stamp too strong. The floor of the gradiator pit is made out of solid hard wood

In General and subject to BKA time ;-)
Arrive for about 9, expect registration about 9.30 - 10.30
bring your papers and documentation etc
As you are challenging for Ikkyu - you will be on first group
expect - Kiri kaeshi, Big technique, Good Fumi Komi lots of kiai - KK is very significant
ji geiko - as above plus strong attacking spirit
tips - dont go mad and try to batter your opponent to death
This is embu( demonstration) not a street fight :-) the judges are looking to see if you can cut reasonably well, are on target and have reasonable Ki Ken tai for the grade
If you do something wrong - get over it immediately and go back to a good men cut
Kata - long sword 1-3 or 1-5 depending on the will of the panel (typically 1-3) either side - the panel will tell you (good idea to be alert at this point :-)
Be calm - if you make a mistake hold up your right hand after the kata (to acknowledge you made a mistake) you will probably get a second chance - dont hold out in the hope the panel might have missed something :-)
Thats pretty much it - Good luck & dont forget that if you dont pass it this time then there is next time and the time after that
cheers

hey errr....
Do you think it would be alright if a newbie came to lidstone, not to compete but just to watch and help out with whatever needs doing?
9:30 at Nenriki right?
thanks

Actually there is a refreeing seminar before hand with Mike Davies - WKC referee
If you want to attend - even just to watch - its very worthwhile
And just to be complete there is a mini grading seminar after the event
if you want to know - ask the man wholl be on the panel :-)
cheers

Wow... at that hour I'll probably be napping on the train on my way!! Well, you can grab my big red mop and start cleaning 3 dojo floors before I arrive. Other tasks includes cleaning the toilets, taping the gradiator area, and fetching teas and coffees. I guess they'll start registration at 11am, and the first round at mid day.
By all means bring your bogu! Last year after the taikai, they have one gym for the grading mini seminar, and the other gym for general practice.
BTW apart from the usual champion, runner-ups and fighting spirit award, there is also a prize for fastest ippon --and as a result a loooooot of people start moving their shinai over their head when they are still in sonkyo!! pretty amazing to watch if you know it is going to happen all the time

Thanks for replies all, if I had bogu I would bring it, but when I said newbie I meant it, as in had my first free sparring (jigeiko?) this sunday where I finally figured out that you have to hit the other guy with that stick thing before he hits you.:ditsy:
However, I will be practicing at Mumeishi on Sunday morning though (not the grading).
Looking forward to meeting you all, (I'll be the chubby guy who doesn't know anyone) I'll aim to arrive at 10:30.
Thanks again.

I went and came away with Ikkyu and £20 less in the bank!
But it was all worth it.
I was surprised to see that a lot of the ikkyu candidates were rejected before the kata.
I was partnered with someone who was unable to pass. He did wrong footwork during the third kata. At the time I thought that it was me...
