Hi, I was wondering if it is better to use a lighter shinai as to a heavier one.
Thank you.

Which do you think works best in your experience? Because whatever you think is what is best for you. Doesn't matter what works for anybody else.

It probably has more to do with balance than weight.

Do some suburi with your various shinai before you warm up. Sometimes for no real reason whatsoever, one will feel better than the others. Go with that one. To me it's partially balance, it's partially weight, but if it feels comfortable then use it. That's my method. It'll change which shinai feels best to me from day to day, but if it's comfortable, its good for me for that day.

I think you should use whatever you train with. Trying something new at the tournament never seems to be a good idea, at least for me.

most 'shiai shinai' are lighter at the tip so they feel faster. They won't last as long though so they aren't appropriate for day to day practice.

Talking about technology. I just heard of someone who put a bearing in the tip to weight his shinai. That is insane!
